Philadelphia Union continued their remarkable run of form with a commanding 5-0 victory over 10-man FC Cincinnati on Wednesday, with Bruno Damiani scoring his first MLS hat-trick and the Sullivan brothers producing another standout performance.

The win at Subaru Park extended Philadelphia’s unbeaten MLS run to nine matches and strengthened their push up the Eastern Conference standings. Cincinnati, meanwhile, were left with little chance after midfielder Obinna Nwobodo was sent off in the 16th minute.

Nwobodo red card changes the contest

Cincinnati started the match with both sides looking to build on their recent league campaigns, but the visitors' task became considerably harder when Nwobodo received a straight red card following a VAR review.

The dismissal left Cincinnati with 10 players for more than 70 minutes and allowed Philadelphia to take control of possession and territory.

The Union eventually broke through in the 43rd minute when Quinn Sullivan converted a penalty.

Philadelphia then doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time, with Damiani finishing from a move involving both Quinn and his younger brother Cavan Sullivan.

Damiani takes over after the break

The second half quickly became the Damiani show.

The Uruguayan forward struck again in the 49th minute after another combination involving the Sullivan brothers, giving Philadelphia a three-goal cushion.

Damiani completed his hat-trick in the 61st minute, capping a highly efficient attacking display.

It was the first MLS hat-trick of his career and continued an impressive run for the 24-year-old designated player. 

Philadelphia's official match report highlighted that Cavan and Quinn Sullivan were both credited with assists on two separate goals in the same match, an MLS first for a pair of brothers. 

Sullivan brothers make history

The night was particularly significant for the Sullivan family.

Quinn Sullivan scored the opening goal from the penalty spot and finished with two assists, while 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan supplied two assists.

Their combination play repeatedly caused problems for Cincinnati, including the move that created Damiani's second goal and another sequence leading to his hat-trick goal.

Cavan's performance also adds to a growing run of impressive displays from the teenage Philadelphia homegrown player. He had already contributed to goals in five consecutive MLS matches before Wednesday's game. 

Philadelphia dominate the numbers

The final score reflected Philadelphia's control.

The Union finished with 64.7% possession and registered 18 shots compared with just one from Cincinnati. Philadelphia also put six attempts on target, while Cincinnati failed to record a shot on goal. (FC Cincinnati)

Goalkeeper Andre Blake therefore completed the match without being forced into a save, as Philadelphia recorded another clean sheet.

Milan Iloski completed the scoring in the 89th minute by converting Philadelphia's second penalty of the evening. It was his 12th goal of the season, according to the match report. 

Nine games unbeaten for Union

The result extended Philadelphia's unbeaten league streak to nine matches.

The Union have now won seven and drawn two of their last nine MLS games, a dramatic improvement following their 6-4 defeat away to Inter Miami on May 24.

They entered the match with a strong run since the World Cup break and have continued to climb the Eastern Conference standings.

Cincinnati, on the other hand, suffered their second consecutive heavy defeat after previously losing 4-0 to Nashville. Their four-game unbeaten streak was already over heading into Philadelphia, and the 5-0 defeat further exposed their struggles. 

What comes next

Philadelphia will now turn their attention to a trip to San Diego FC for their next MLS fixture.

For Cincinnati, the immediate challenge is to recover quickly at home against Charlotte FC on September 12.

For the Union, however, Wednesday's victory offered more than three points. Damiani found his scoring rhythm, the Sullivan brothers continued their rapid development, and Philadelphia's unbeaten run reached nine games.

Zurich: FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing one of the biggest challenges of his leadership as criticism against him continues to grow. Despite increasing calls for his resignation from football figures and political leaders, Infantino has made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down and believes he still enjoys the backing of a majority of FIFA's member associations.

The latest developments come after Infantino held a seven-hour emergency meeting with senior FIFA officials in Rabat, Morocco, to discuss the ongoing crisis surrounding the world football governing body. According to reports, the meeting focused on the growing controversy following the collapse of FIFA's proposal to sell commercial stakes in the FIFA World Cup to private investors.

The commercial proposal reportedly faced strong resistance from several football administrators, national federations and stakeholders, who raised concerns over the long-term implications of bringing private investment into one of the sport's biggest global events. The opposition eventually forced FIFA to abandon the plan, triggering fresh scrutiny of Infantino's leadership.

Despite the setback, sources close to FIFA believe the president remains confident of retaining enough support to continue in office. Much of that backing is understood to come from member associations across Africa, Asia and South America, regions that have consistently supported several of Infantino's reforms during his tenure.

Following the lengthy internal discussions in Morocco, Infantino was seen attending a Women's Africa Cup of Nations match alongside FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, signalling that FIFA's day-to-day operations would continue despite the ongoing controversy.

Pressure on the FIFA president intensified after former Portugal captain Luis Figo publicly demanded his resignation. Figo accused Infantino of damaging the credibility of FIFA's highest office and criticised his leadership in unusually strong terms. The former Ballon d'Or winner argued that the organisation now requires new leadership to restore confidence among football stakeholders.

The criticism has also expanded beyond the football community. Reports indicate that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has joined voices questioning FIFA's recent decisions, adding a political dimension to the controversy. At the same time, reports of disagreements linked to Morocco's role in FIFA-related matters have further increased pressure on the governing body ahead of several major international tournaments.

Political observers believe the involvement of government leaders reflects the growing global influence of FIFA's decisions, particularly as preparations continue for upcoming World Cup events. With football becoming increasingly connected to commercial investment, infrastructure and international diplomacy, developments within FIFA are drawing attention far beyond the sporting world.

Despite the criticism, there is currently no indication that Infantino intends to resign. Officials familiar with FIFA's internal structure note that the organisation's president is elected by its 211 member associations, making continued political support within the Congress crucial for any leadership challenge.

For now, the FIFA president appears determined to weather the growing criticism. However, with calls for his resignation becoming louder and political scrutiny increasing, the coming months are expected to be significant for both Infantino and the future direction of world football's governing organisation.

Miami: Lionel Messi once again proved why he remains one of football's biggest stars, producing a brilliant all-round performance to guide Inter Miami to a 4-2 victory over Atletico San Luis in the Leagues Cup. The Argentine captain scored two goals and provided an assist as Miami recovered from an early deficit to continue their impressive run in the tournament.

The match, played at Nu Stadium, was briefly interrupted by severe weather, with the second half delayed for around 30 minutes due to lightning in the area. Despite the disruption, Inter Miami maintained control after taking the lead and eventually secured another important victory.

San Luis made the brighter start and stunned the home crowd in the fourth minute when David Rodríguez headed his side into an early lead. However, the advantage lasted only a few minutes as Messi quickly responded with his trademark composure.

The 39-year-old found the equaliser in the 11th minute, finishing confidently after being picked out by Noah Allen. The goal immediately shifted the momentum in Inter Miami's favour as the hosts began dominating possession and creating regular chances.

Messi struck again just before half-time, scoring his second goal of the evening in the 44th minute to hand Miami a deserved lead. His movement inside the penalty area and clinical finishing once again highlighted the quality that has made him one of football's greatest players.

The first match will be played at Houston Stadium, where Canada will look to continue its impressive campaign against a battle-tested Moroccan side. Later, all eyes will shift to Philadelphia, where Kylian Mbappe’s France will attempt to book a place in the quarter-finals against a resilient Paraguay team fresh from a major upset.

For Canada, reaching this stage has already marked a significant achievement, but the challenge now becomes even tougher. Morocco arrive with momentum and experience after surviving a tense penalty shootout against the Netherlands in the previous round.

The two nations have met only twice before in international football, with Morocco maintaining the upper hand. The North African side defeated Canada 2-1 during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, while the other meeting ended in a draw. Canada are still searching for their first-ever victory against Morocco.

Canada advanced to the Round of 16 after edging South Africa 1-0 in the previous round. Earlier in the tournament, they produced an emphatic 6-0 win over Qatar and earned a draw against Bosnia, although they suffered a narrow defeat to Switzerland.

Morocco, meanwhile, have continued the strong form that has made them one of the most respected teams outside Europe and South America. After beating Haiti and Scotland during the group phase and drawing with Brazil, they overcame the Netherlands on penalties following a 1-1 deadlock.

Much of Canada’s hopes will rest on captain and star full-back Alphonso Davies, while striker Jonathan David remains their key attacking threat. Morocco are expected to rely on the creativity of Hakim Ziyech and the leadership of Achraf Hakimi as they chase another deep World Cup run.

The second match of the day features one of the tournament favorites. France enter the knockout clash unbeaten and in dominant form, having won all four matches so far.

Didier Deschamps’ side cruised past Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 and previously defeated Norway, Iraq and Senegal during the group stage. Their attack has been among the most dangerous in the competition, led by captain Kylian Mbappe, who currently tops the Golden Boot standings with six goals.

Mbappe’s form has once again underlined why he remains one of the biggest stars in world football. France will be expecting another influential performance as they target a place in the last eight.

France, meanwhile, possess one of the tournament’s deepest squads, with players such as Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, Aurelien Tchouameni and William Saliba supporting Mbappe.

With quarter-final places on the line, Saturday’s matches promise contrasting battles—Canada and Morocco seeking another historic step forward, while France aim to reinforce their status as one of the strongest contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 title.
