Aamir Khan’s Wedding Guest List Excludes Phogat Family Despite Long-Standing Bond Since Dangal

Mumbai/Charkhi Dadri: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is set to marry his longtime partner Gauri Spratt in a private ceremony on July 5, but one notable absence from the guest list has caught attention. The Phogat family, whose inspiring journey formed the basis of Aamir’s blockbuster film Dangal, has not been invited to the wedding.

The development marks the first major personal celebration involving Aamir Khan since the release of Dangal in which the Phogat family will not be participating. Over the years, the actor and the family of renowned wrestling coach Mahavir Singh Phogat have shared a close association that extended beyond the film’s promotional campaign.

Speaking on the matter, Dronacharya Awardee Mahavir Singh Phogat and wrestler Geeta Phogat confirmed that they had not received any invitation for the wedding ceremony.

The absence of an invitation has drawn attention because Aamir has previously attended important family events hosted by the Phogats. In November 2016, shortly before the release of Dangal, the actor travelled to Balali village in Haryana’s Bhiwani district to attend Geeta Phogat’s wedding. He reportedly flew from Mumbai to Delhi and then reached the region by chartered aircraft.

Several members of the Dangal team accompanied him on that occasion, including director Nitesh Tiwari, actress Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, who portrayed members of the Phogat family in the film.

The relationship remained cordial even after the film’s release. In 2017, Mahavir Singh Phogat and several family members were invited to Aamir Khan’s birthday celebrations in Mumbai. The actor had reportedly extended a special invitation to the family, reflecting the bond that had developed during and after the making of Dangal.

Geeta Phogat also revealed that the family had received an invitation to the wedding of Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan and fitness trainer Nupur Shikhare in January 2024. However, she said they were unable to attend due to personal reasons.

Released in December 2016, Dangal was based on the life and struggles of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat. The film chronicled their journey from Haryana’s Balali village to international wrestling success and became one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever made, earning massive success both domestically and overseas.

Aamir Khan officially confirmed his upcoming marriage earlier this week. The actor announced that he would marry Bengaluru-based entrepreneur and fashion professional Gauri Spratt in a private ceremony attended only by close family members and friends.

The wedding will mark Aamir’s third marriage. He was previously married to film producer Reena Dutta from 1986 until their separation in 2002. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, before the couple announced their separation in 2021.

Aamir publicly introduced Gauri Spratt to the media during his 60th birthday celebrations and has since been seen with her at several public events. While the wedding is expected to remain a low-key affair, the absence of the Phogat family from the guest list has emerged as an unexpected talking point, given the long-standing association between the actor and the family whose story inspired one of the biggest films of his career.
