The Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) 2026 results have brought a major development for thousands of teachers already working in government schools. While more than 13.3 lakh candidates cleared the examination, 62,028 working teachers failed to qualify.

The result comes against the backdrop of the Supreme Court's ruling that made clearing the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) mandatory for certain in-service teachers to continue in service. UPTET 2026 result: Overall pass percentage

Of the 2,68,799 working teachers who appeared for UPTET 2026, 2,06,771 qualified, leaving 62,028 who failed to clear the test.

At the primary level, 93,387 of 1,22,405 working teachers qualified, giving them a success rate of 76.29%.

At the upper-primary level, 1,13,384 of 1,46,394 working teachers qualified, resulting in a pass percentage of 77.45%.

Why did these teachers have to take UPTET?

Where the process stands

Qualifying marks — the number that matters most
To pass UPTET, candidates need a minimum of 60% marks, or 90 out of 150, for the General/Unreserved category. Reserved category candidates — OBC, SC, ST and PwD — need a minimum of 55%, or roughly 82-82.5 out of 150. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 results are declared together on the same day, and candidates need to clear whichever paper (or both) they appeared for to be declared qualified.

How to check your result
Once live, candidates can log in to upessc.up.gov.in (or updeled.gov.in, the legacy portal some sources still reference) using their registration number and either their date of birth or password. The scorecard will display the candidate's name, roll number, category, subject-wise marks, total marks and final qualifying status.

No rechecking, no normalisation
UPESSC does not offer any rechecking or re-evaluation option for UPTET results — the result declared based on the final answer key is treated as final. There's also no normalisation applied to the scoring; marks are calculated directly against the final answer key rather than adjusted across shifts.

What qualifying actually gets you
Passing UPTET doesn't hand you a teaching job directly — it makes you eligible to apply for teacher recruitment drives in Uttar Pradesh's primary and upper-primary government and government-aided schools. Final selection for any specific job still depends on separate recruitment exams, merit lists and vacancy announcements. On the upside, the UPTET certificate now carries lifetime validity, per central government directives, meaning qualified candidates don't need to retake the exam to remain eligible for future recruitment cycles.

What to do once the result is out
Candidates are advised to download and save their scorecard immediately once it's live, verify every detail — name, roll number, category, marks — carefully, and collect their TET eligibility certificate from their regional DIET (District Institute of Education and Training) centre using the required documents: a copy of the application form, admit card and result, along with original photo ID proof and, where applicable, caste or special reservation certificates.

The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) conducted UPTET 2026 across 955 centres in 60 districts from July 2 to July 4, with Paper 1 (Primary Level) and Paper 2 (Upper Primary Level) held in separate shifts. Of the 19.94 lakh candidates who registered, 17.7 lakh actually appeared for the exam — an attendance rate of 88.77 percent. UPESSC Chairman Prashant Kumar said the commission's AI-based surveillance systems flagged 44 cases of impersonation during the exam, and that retired IAS and IPS officers were deployed as observers across all 60 districts to oversee fair conduct.

The provisional answer key is already out, published on the UPESSC website, and candidates have until July 14 at 11:59 pm to file objections against any answers they believe are incorrect. Once that window closes, the commission is expected to review the objections and release a final answer key — tentatively expected sometime in late July — before moving to result preparation.

Because Paper 2 was held across three separate shifts and Paper 1 across two, the commission has said the final results will go through a normalisation process designed to adjust for any difficulty variation between shifts and exam dates, so scores are comparable across all candidates regardless of which slot they sat. That step typically adds time to the results timeline compared to single-shift exams.

Based on the current schedule, UPTET 2026 results are expected sometime in August, roughly a month after the exam concluded — in line with the commission's usual two-month window from exam date to declaration. Once released, results will be published as scorecards on the official website, downloadable using each candidate's registration number and password or date of birth.

For candidates who clear the exam, the UPTET certificate carries lifetime validity, allowing successful candidates to apply for teaching positions in government-run primary and upper-primary schools across Uttar Pradesh whenever fresh recruitment drives are announced — including, potentially, the Super TET process, which the commission has indicated will be notified only after UPTET results are finalised.

For now, the immediate deadline that matters is the July 14 objection window — after that, all eyes shift to the final answer key and, eventually, the result itself.

At Tilak Dhari Post Graduate College (TD College) in Jaunpur, many teachers arriving for the exam described the test as more than just an eligibility assessment. For them, it has become a matter of professional credibility and self-respect.

Speaking to media persons outside the examination centre, teachers said the requirement to clear the exam has created an uncomfortable situation both at work and at home.

“One phase of life was when children respected their parents and teachers without question. Parents would tell their children to study hard and listen to their teachers. Now our own children tell us, ‘First pass the exam yourself, then teach us,’” a teacher who travelled from Gorakhpur to appear for the examination said.

His remarks reflected the sentiments of several candidates who believe the policy has placed experienced educators in a difficult position. According to them, being asked to prove their competence through another examination after years of teaching has affected their confidence and public perception.

The UPTET 2026 examination began on July 2 and concluded on Saturday. Thousands of candidates, including serving teachers and aspiring educators, appeared across centres in the state.

Many teachers at the Jaunpur centre argued that while they support quality education and professional accountability, the process should also acknowledge practical teaching experience accumulated over the years. Some said the examination has led to questions from family members, students and even neighbours about their professional standing.

Several candidates described the psychological pressure associated with the test. They said preparing for a competitive examination while continuing regular teaching responsibilities has not been easy, particularly for those who have spent years in classrooms guiding students through similar assessments.

For many, the challenge is not merely academic but emotional.

“After teaching children for years, sitting in an examination hall again at this stage of life feels very different. It becomes a question of honour and reputation,” another candidate said.

The issue has sparked debate in educational circles, with supporters of the examination arguing that periodic assessments help maintain teaching standards. Others believe that experience and classroom performance should carry greater weight in evaluating educators.

The Uttar Pradesh government has maintained that teacher eligibility examinations are aimed at ensuring quality and uniform standards in the education system. However, concerns raised by serving teachers have brought attention to the human side of the policy and the pressures faced by educators balancing professional responsibilities with certification requirements.
