Mali Faces Fresh Coordinated Attacks as Jihadists and Tuareg Fighters Strike Multiple Towns

Suspected jihadist militants and Tuareg separatists launched coordinated attacks across multiple towns and a prison in Mali, prompting military operations as authorities assess casualties and damage.

Mali witnessed another major security crisis on Saturday after suspected jihadist militants, supported by separatist Tuareg fighters, launched coordinated attacks across several parts of the country. The assaults targeted key northern towns and a prison, underlining the continuing instability in the West African nation despite ongoing military operations.

According to military officials, local residents and security sources, the attacks began at around 4:00 a.m. local time and struck the towns of Gao, Anefis and Sevare, while a prison in Kenieroba was also attacked. Residents reported hearing intense gunfire and explosions as security forces responded to the assaults.

The Malian army acknowledged that multiple attacks had taken place and confirmed that military operations were underway to repel the attackers. However, authorities have not released details regarding casualties, injuries or the extent of damage caused by the coordinated strikes.

One of the most significant targets was the prison at Kenieroba. Officials have yet to clarify whether inmates escaped during the attack or whether the prison sustained major damage. Security agencies are continuing to assess the situation as investigations remain ongoing.

The latest violence comes just over two months after a similar coordinated offensive allegedly carried out by the same alliance of jihadist organisations and Tuareg separatist groups against Mali's military-led government. That earlier operation reportedly resulted in the death of the country's defence minister, marking one of the most serious setbacks for the ruling authorities in recent years.

Mali has struggled with armed insurgencies for more than a decade. Islamist militant groups linked to extremist networks, along with separatist factions seeking greater autonomy in the country's northern regions, have repeatedly targeted military installations, government infrastructure and civilian populations.

The country's security environment has become increasingly complex since military juntas assumed power through successive coups in 2020 and 2021. Despite intensified counter-insurgency operations and changes in security partnerships, attacks by armed groups have continued across several regions.

The renewed assaults are expected to raise further concerns about Mali's ability to contain the insurgency, particularly as militant groups demonstrate their capability to coordinate attacks across multiple locations simultaneously.

Security operations remained active throughout Saturday, with the army pursuing those responsible for the attacks. Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant while military personnel continue search and clearance operations.

No group has officially claimed responsibility for Saturday's attacks. However, security officials suspect the involvement of jihadist factions operating alongside separatist Tuareg fighters, based on the nature and coordination of the assaults.

The latest incidents highlight the persistent security challenges facing Mali, where violence linked to insurgent groups continues to disrupt daily life and threaten regional stability. Officials are expected to provide further updates once military operations conclude and casualty assessments are completed.
