India tightened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka after the hosts were bowled out for 290 in their first innings, leaving them 213 runs behind India's 503/9 declared. Sri Lanka have now been forced to follow on and are back at the crease for their second innings in Colombo.

India had declared their first innings at 503/9, powered by Dhruv Jurel's unbeaten 115 and Devdutt Padikkal's 117. Rishabh Pant also provided momentum with a quick 63 as India built a substantial first-innings lead. 

Sri Lanka Bowled Out for 290

Sri Lanka resumed Day 4 at 265/8 and managed to add only 25 runs before losing their remaining wickets. The hosts' lower order had delayed India's push on Day 3, with Sonal Dinusha providing the main resistance.

Dinusha completed his century on Wednesday after reaching 100 off 147 balls, but his effort could not prevent Sri Lanka from conceding a significant lead.

India's bowlers had maintained pressure throughout the innings. Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar were among the leading wicket-takers, while the debutant Saransh Jain also claimed his maiden international wicket by dismissing Lahiru Kumara. 

India Enforce Follow-On

With Sri Lanka finishing 213 runs behind, India opted to enforce the follow-on, sending the hosts back in immediately for their second innings.

Sri Lanka's immediate priority is now to survive the second innings and make India bat again. India, meanwhile, will be looking for early wickets to put the match beyond Sri Lanka's reach.

The follow-on puts the hosts under considerable pressure because they must erase the 213-run deficit and then build a lead if they are to set India a target.

Dinusha's Resistance Goes in Vain

Sonal Dinusha was one of the few Sri Lankan batters to offer sustained resistance. He had remained unbeaten on 85 at the end of Day 3 after Sri Lanka reached 265/8, with the hosts still 238 runs behind India's total at that stage. 

His century briefly raised hopes of Sri Lanka avoiding the follow-on, but India's attack eventually wrapped up the innings.

India in Command

India's position is considerably stronger than it was at the end of Day 3. The visitors had already dominated the first two days after posting 503/9 declared and then reducing Sri Lanka to 8/2. 

The first Test of the series also went India's way, with the visitors winning in Galle by 165 runs. Sri Lanka entered the Colombo Test without key batters Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal, adding to the challenge for the hosts. 

With Sri Lanka now batting again after following on, India have a clear opportunity to close out the second Test and strengthen their position in the series.

Shubman Gill will continue to lead the side, while KL Rahul has been named vice-captain. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant retains his place in the playing group alongside Dhruv Jurel, who has been selected as the second wicketkeeping option.

The biggest talking point from the squad announcement is the inclusion of Saransh Jain, whose consistent domestic performances and impressive showing for India A on the recent Sri Lanka tour earned him his first opportunity at the highest level. The 33-year-old all-rounder strengthened his case by scoring an unbeaten 70 and claiming six wickets during the unofficial four-day series, convincing the selectors that he could add balance to India's spin attack.

Jadeja also returns to the Test setup after missing recent international assignments because of a tennis elbow injury. His comeback provides India with an experienced left-arm spin option and additional batting depth in conditions expected to favour slow bowlers.

However, not every selection has been confirmed without conditions. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and batter Sai Sudharsan have both been included in the squad, but their participation remains subject to receiving fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence before the series begins. Bumrah is recovering from a knee issue sustained during the ODI series against England, while Sudharsan is also undergoing rehabilitation.

India have also been forced into changes because of injuries. All-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the first Test due to a hamstring injury, while Nitish Kumar Reddy has not been considered after failing to recover fully from a quadriceps injury. Their absence created an opportunity for Saransh Jain to enter the national squad.

The batting order is expected to retain its familiar structure, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal likely to open the innings. Captain Shubman Gill is set to continue at No. 4, while Pant remains India's first-choice wicketkeeper. Devdutt Padikkal has also retained his place in the squad as an additional batting option.

India's spin department appears particularly strong for Sri Lankan conditions. Alongside Jadeja, the selectors have backed Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar, while Saransh Jain offers another off-spin option capable of contributing with the bat lower down the order. The combination gives India multiple tactical options depending on pitch conditions and player availability.

The pace attack will be led by Bumrah if declared fit, with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna expected to shoulder the primary fast-bowling responsibilities. Gurnoor Brar, who impressed during recent India A assignments, has also been retained in the squad as additional seam-bowling cover.

Before the Test series begins, India will play a four-day practice match in Colombo starting August 7 to help the squad acclimatise to Sri Lankan conditions. The opening Test will be played in Galle from August 15, while the second and final Test is scheduled to begin in Colombo on August 23. Both matches carry valuable World Test Championship points as India look to improve their position early in the current cycle.

With experienced names returning, fresh faces earning opportunities and several fitness updates still to come, India's squad reflects a blend of continuity and transition as the team prepares for another crucial overseas challenge in Test cricket.

The visitors entered the final day in a commanding position and wasted little time turning their advantage into victory. Brar starred with the ball, claiming six wickets in Sri Lanka A’s second innings to finish with a match haul of 10 wickets, while Sudharsan followed up his first-innings century with an unbeaten knock in the chase.

The result capped a successful tour for India A, which had also won the ODI tri-series involving Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A earlier in the campaign. The first unofficial Test between India A and Sri Lanka A had ended in a draw.

Resuming the fourth day on 541/8, India A added only two runs before declaring their first innings at 543/9. Saransh Jain remained unbeaten on 70, while injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad did not come out to bat. The declaration gave India A a substantial first-innings lead of 177 runs after Sri Lanka A had posted 366.

With the match slipping away, Sri Lanka A needed a strong response from their top order. Instead, Brar produced a devastating opening spell with the new ball.

The pacer struck twice in the opening exchanges, dismissing Sohan de Livera and Nuwanidu Fernando. Aaqib Nabi then removed Pawantha Weerasinghe as the hosts collapsed to 9/3, handing India A complete control of the contest.

Sri Lanka A found some resistance through Ashen Bandara, who counterattacked after the early setbacks. The right-hander played aggressively, taking on the Indian bowlers and reaching his half-century in just 47 deliveries. During one over from Brar, Bandara struck three consecutive boundaries to keep the scoreboard moving.

Captain Sahan Arachchige also contributed with a useful innings before being dismissed by Yash Thakur. At lunch, Sri Lanka A had recovered to 115/4 and still harboured hopes of extending the contest.

Those hopes faded quickly after the break.

Brar returned to dismantle the middle order, removing both Anjala Bandara and the well-set Ashen Bandara, who top-scored with 87. While Keshara Nuwantha and Dilum Sudheera attempted to rebuild with brief contributions, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Saransh Jain supported the pace attack effectively and chipped in with two wickets, ensuring Sri Lanka A never gained any sustained momentum.

Brar completed the job in emphatic fashion. He dismissed Sudheera and Dulaj Samuditha to wrap up the innings and finish with remarkable figures of 6 wickets in the second innings. Having already taken four wickets in the first innings, the pacer ended the match with 10 wickets for 145 runs.

Sri Lanka A were eventually bowled out for 209, leaving India A with a target of just 33 runs.

The chase proved to be a mere formality.

Sai Sudharsan, who had laid the foundation for India A’s dominance with a superb 168 in the first innings, continued his fine form in the second innings. The left-hander remained unbeaten on 25 from 22 balls and struck the winning boundary to complete the victory.

Aman Mokalde also remained not out after scoring 11 as India A reached the target without losing a wicket in only 6.2 overs.

The match highlighted the depth of India’s emerging talent pool. Sudharsan’s consistency with the bat and Brar’s match-winning spell with the ball were central to the victory, while contributions from Saransh Jain and other squad members underlined the team's balance.

With a drawn first Test and a commanding win in the second, India A finished the series unbeaten and reinforced their strong record in overseas developmental tours.
