The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, has announced its organisational election schedule in Chhattisgarh, introducing a two-phase electoral process aimed at strengthening campus-based student leadership across the state.

Under the new system, elections will first be conducted in government, private and other recognised colleges and universities to elect campus presidents. The second phase will comprise district and state-level organisational elections, in which only elected campus presidents will be eligible to contest and vote.

Two-Phase Election Process

According to the organisation, the first phase will focus exclusively on electing campus presidents in colleges and universities. Based on the election results, an 11-member executive committee will be constituted in each institution. Various organisational posts within these committees will be filled following NSUI's prescribed selection process.

In the second phase, only candidates who have been elected as campus presidents will be allowed to contest district and state organisational elections. Voting rights at these levels will also be restricted to the elected campus presidents, ensuring that leadership emerges directly from student representatives.

Eligibility and Membership Rules

NSUI has clarified that, unlike the Youth Congress, it will not conduct membership drives outside educational institutions. Membership will be granted only through recognised colleges and universities.

Students between 16 and 27 years of age will be eligible to contest the elections. The organisation has fixed the membership fee at ₹45 for a three-year term.

Screening Before Final Appointment

The organisation stated that after the election process is completed, all elected representatives will undergo document verification and eligibility scrutiny. This will be followed by personal interviews before district and state office-bearers are finalised.

NSUI said the additional screening process is intended to ensure that active and eligible student leaders are selected for organisational responsibilities.

Focus on Campus-Based Leadership

The revised election model aims to bring student politics back to educational campuses by encouraging leadership to emerge from colleges and universities.

According to the organisation, students elected at the campus level will receive organisational training, ideological orientation and leadership development opportunities, enabling them to take on larger responsibilities at the district, state and national levels in the future.

The announcement comes as student organisations across the country continue to focus on expanding campus participation and strengthening grassroots leadership through internal democratic processes.
