Mizoram University Museum Declared India’s 21st Designated Repository for Biodiversity Conservation

In a significant boost to biodiversity conservation and scientific research in India, the Natural History Museum (NHM) of Mizoram University in Aizawl has been declared the country’s 21st Designated Repository under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

The recognition was granted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change following a recommendation from the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA). The notification was issued on June 19, 2026, under Section 39 of the Biological Diversity Act, making the museum an officially recognised centre for the preservation and management of authenticated biological specimens.

The move is expected to strengthen India’s biodiversity documentation and conservation framework, particularly in the ecologically rich northeastern region of the country.

Designated Repositories play a crucial role in the nation’s biodiversity governance system. These institutions are responsible for preserving verified biological samples that serve as reference material for scientific research, species identification, taxonomic studies and long-term conservation efforts. Such repositories also support regulatory and academic work related to biological resources.

With its new status, the Natural History Museum at Mizoram University will preserve a wide range of biological specimens collected from the region. These include pteridophytes, macrofungi, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, moths, beetles and butterflies, among other important groups of flora and fauna.

The museum will also function as a centre for housing type specimens of newly discovered species. Type specimens are considered the official reference examples of species used by scientists for classification and future research. Their preservation is regarded as a critical aspect of biodiversity science and taxonomy.

Established in 2022, the museum has rapidly emerged as a key institution for biodiversity research in Northeast India. Its location within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot gives it special scientific importance. The Indo-Burma region is recognised globally for its exceptional biological richness and high levels of endemism.

Scientists note that Mizoram and the wider northeastern region are home to more than 7,500 species of flowering plants and over 2,000 animal species. Many of these are rare, endemic or insufficiently studied, making systematic documentation and conservation increasingly important.

Officials believe the repository will help improve the cataloguing and preservation of biological resources from the region while supporting research on species diversity and ecosystem health.

The museum is also expected to contribute to the conservation of rare and locally significant species. Among them is Leptobrachella tamdil, an amphibian species discovered in Mizoram’s forests, which highlights the region’s continuing potential for new biological discoveries.

Even before receiving repository status, NHM had already collected and preserved more than 500 biological specimens. Researchers associated with the museum are actively engaged in studies involving plants, insects, fishes and several other biological groups. The institution has also been working to build scientific collections that can support future academic and conservation initiatives.

Experts say the designation will encourage greater collaboration between regional institutions, researchers and conservation agencies. It is also expected to improve access to scientifically verified specimens for researchers working on biodiversity-related projects across the country.

The development aligns with India’s broader environmental goals, including the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2024–2030). It is also seen as supporting global biodiversity conservation commitments aimed at protecting ecosystems, documenting species diversity and promoting sustainable management of biological resources.

As biodiversity faces growing pressures from habitat loss, climate change and human activities, institutions such as the Mizoram University Natural History Museum are increasingly being viewed as vital components of the country’s conservation infrastructure.
