Mamata Banerjee Appeals to CJI to Safeguard Constitution and Protect Citizens

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday urged Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud to uphold the country’s Constitution, democracy, and judiciary, while also protecting citizens from being wrongly targeted by government agencies. The appeal was made during the inauguration of the new building of the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court.

Addressing a gathering of former judges, senior lawyers, and legal officials, Mamata said, “You, Chief Justice, are the guardian of our Constitution, and we rely on your legal protection. Please protect the public.” She further emphasised that the judiciary must remain impartial, free from caste, religion, or political influence, and serve as a system “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

Mamata also highlighted concerns over pre-trial media trials, stating, “These days, media trials are happening even before cases are settled, and this must stop. I congratulate ordinary people who continue to trust the judicial system.” She urged unity across society and appealed to legal authorities to work collectively in safeguarding democratic institutions.

The West Bengal CM’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny over the recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids on the offices and residences of I-PAC Director and Trinamool Congress IT Head Prateek Jain on January 8. The ED alleges certain irregularities involving the company, prompting a petition in the Supreme Court. The matter was heard on January 15, with the apex court issuing notices to the West Bengal government, requesting a reply within two weeks.

While Mamata did not directly reference the ED action in her speech, sources indicate her appeal reflects growing concern over alleged misuse of investigative agencies to target political opponents. She urged that citizens should not be unfairly victimised during investigations and called on the judiciary to ensure accountability and fairness.

The event marked a significant occasion for Jalpaiguri’s judicial infrastructure, as the new circuit bench is expected to facilitate access to justice in the northern regions of West Bengal. Mamata stressed that a strong, independent judiciary is essential for maintaining the country’s democratic framework and protecting the rights of ordinary citizens.

Legal experts say Mamata’s remarks underline the balance between governance, independent investigation, and judicial oversight, highlighting the judiciary’s role in shielding citizens from potential misuse of state machinery.
