Parents interested in securing a seat for their children can submit online applications until July 31, 2026. The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST), which serves as the entrance examination for admission, is scheduled to be conducted on November 28, 2026.

Operated by the Ministry of Education, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas provide free education, boarding, lodging, textbooks and various extracurricular facilities. However, admission remains highly competitive due to limited seats and district-based selection criteria.

For Class 6 admissions, candidates must satisfy three essential eligibility conditions.

First, the student must currently be studying in Class 5 in a government-recognized or government-aided school during the ongoing academic session. Since JNV admissions begin directly from Class 6, students not enrolled in Class 5 are not eligible to apply.

Second, the applicant must fall within the prescribed age bracket. According to the admission guidelines, the child should have been born between May 1, 2014, and April 30, 2018.

Third, the student must be a resident of the district for which the application is being submitted. In addition, the candidate should also be studying Class 5 in a school located within the same district. Applications that do not meet the district residency requirement may be rejected during verification.

Admission to Navodaya Vidyalayas is based entirely on performance in the entrance examination and successful document verification. Students who qualify in the merit list and produce valid documents, including residence certificates and other required records, are considered for final admission.

Reservation benefits are available as per government norms for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and children with disabilities.

Each district Navodaya Vidyalaya generally offers around 80 seats in Class 6. A significant feature of the admission policy is that 75 percent of the seats are reserved for students from rural areas, while the remaining seats are available for urban and other eligible candidates.

The JNVST examination consists of 80 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. Candidates receive 1.25 marks for every correct answer.

The question paper is divided into three sections. The Mental Ability Test carries 40 questions worth 50 marks. Mathematics includes 20 questions carrying 25 marks, while the Language Test consists of 20 questions for another 25 marks. The examination is based on the Class 5 syllabus level and candidates are given two hours to complete the paper.

The test is conducted at designated examination centres located near the applicant’s district.

One of the major attractions of the Navodaya system is its affordability. Education, accommodation, meals and other facilities remain completely free for students from Classes 6 to 8. For Classes 9 to 12, a nominal Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN) contribution is charged only from boys belonging to the General and OBC categories.

Girls, SC and ST students, children with disabilities and students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families continue to receive all facilities free of cost even in higher classes.

With applications now open, parents are advised to carefully verify eligibility conditions and complete the registration process before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues.
