India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is set to return to international competition at the Lausanne Diamond League in Switzerland on August 21, where he will face a strong field led by Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem and Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage.

The Lausanne meet will mark Chopra's third competition of the 2026 season as he continues his comeback after recovering from a lower-back injury.

Third Event After Injury Comeback

Neeraj made his competitive return in June at the Doha Diamond League, his first appearance since September last year. He finished fourth with a throw of 85.69 metres.

He followed that performance with a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, registering a season-best throw of 85.83 metres.

Following the event, Chopra said his recovery was progressing well and expressed confidence that he would continue improving in the upcoming competitions.

Strong Memories in Lausanne

Lausanne has been one of Chopra's most successful Diamond League venues.

The Indian Olympic medallist won the Diamond League title in Lausanne in 2022 with a throw of 89.08 metres. He also finished runner-up at the same venue in 2024, recording 89.49 metres.

He will now return to the Swiss city aiming to build momentum ahead of the remainder of the international season.

Pathirage Arrives in Top Form

Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage enters the competition as one of the favourites after an impressive season.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist has already achieved a personal best of 92.62 metres, recorded at the Golden Gala in Rome earlier this year. He is currently the only javelin thrower to have crossed the 90-metre mark during the 2026 season.

His recent form makes him one of the strongest contenders for the Lausanne title.

Arshad Nadeem Headlines Strong Field

The men's javelin event is expected to feature one of the strongest line-ups of the season.

Alongside Chopra, Pathirage and Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, the competition will include Grenada's Anderson Peters, Trinidad and Tobago's Keshorn Walcott, Germany's Thomas Röhler and Julian Weber, Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch, Switzerland's Simon Wieland, and USA's Curtis Thompson.

Kujur finished second in the final behind South Africa's R. Mlenga, who won the race with a time of 10.03 seconds. Despite narrowly missing the top spot, the Indian sprinter's timing attracted significant attention as it improved his own record for the fastest 100m run by an Indian athlete outside the country.

The performance also places Kujur among the fastest Indian sprinters in history. His 10.14-second run is now the second-fastest legal time ever recorded by an Indian in the men's 100m event. Only Gurindervir Singh's national record of 10.09 seconds, set earlier this year at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, remains ahead of him.

Gurindervir Singh initially improved the mark with a run of 10.17 seconds, surpassing Kujur's previous best. Kujur responded almost immediately by clocking 10.15 seconds. The following day, Gurindervir raised the bar again with a record-breaking 10.09-second effort.

That sequence highlighted the growing competitiveness within Indian sprinting, a discipline that has historically struggled to match international standards. Kujur's latest achievement in Germany further strengthens the belief that Indian athletes are steadily narrowing the gap with global competitors.

The athlete from Chhattisgarh has been one of India's most consistent performers over the last two seasons. Known for his explosive starts and strong acceleration phase, he has steadily reduced his race timings through dedicated training and exposure to international competitions.

Although Indian sprinters still have ground to cover before reaching those levels, performances from athletes such as Animesh Kujur and Gurindervir Singh suggest that the country's sprinting standards are moving in a positive direction.
