The finale is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm IST and will be streamed for Indian viewers. Porwal, who was crowned Femina Miss India World 2024, has been representing India throughout the Miss World festival in Vietnam, which began on August 9.

Nikita Porwal Represents India

Nikita Porwal, who hails from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, won the Femina Miss India World 2024 title before being selected to represent India at the global pageant.

Her background extends beyond modelling and beauty pageants. She is a trained theatre performer, playwright and actor and has reportedly participated in more than 60 theatrical productions. She studied Performing Arts with a specialisation in Dramatics and is the Creative Director of theatre company Rangrays. 

Porwal has also presented India's social-impact work through the Miss World's Beauty With a Purpose programme. Her Project MAATI focuses on education, nutrition, healthcare and support for tribal communities. The official Miss World profile says the project has included distribution of water filters and nutritional supplies and has expanded its work in Madhya Pradesh. 

Finale to Be Held in Nha Trang

The final will take place in Nha Trang, a coastal city in Vietnam. The Miss World organisation has described the 2026 competition as its 75th-anniversary edition, with the final serving as the culmination of weeks of cultural events, challenges and social-impact activities. 

The competition has featured several preliminary challenges before the final. The Top Model Challenge, for example, recently secured places in the Top 40 for contestants from the Dominican Republic, Nigeria, Vietnam and France. 

Porwal has also attracted attention for her cultural presentation during the festival. She performed in the Dances of the World segment in an outfit inspired by the cultural and devotional traditions associated with Goddess Meenakshi. 

India Has Won Six Miss World Crowns

India has a strong history at the Miss World competition, having produced six winners.

The most recent Indian winner was Manushi Chhillar, who won the title in 2017. Before her, Priyanka Chopra won the crown in 2000, while other Indian winners include Reita Faria, Aishwarya Rai, Diana Hayden and Yukta Mookhey.

Porwal is therefore entering the final with the possibility of extending India's long association with the competition.

Thailand's Opal Suchata Won in 2025

The reigning Miss World is Opal Suchata Chuangsri of Thailand, who won the 2025 competition in Hyderabad.

The 2025 final was held on May 31 at the HITEX Exhibition Centre, where contestants from more than 100 countries competed. Ethiopia's Hasset Dereje was the first runner-up, while Poland's Maja Klajda finished second runner-up and Martinique's Aurélie Joachim was third runner-up.

Suchata's victory gave Thailand its first Miss World title.

A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 suffered substantial damage during take-off from Munich Airport on August 15 after its speed dropped twice during the take-off roll, forcing the pilots to continue the departure despite limited runway remaining. The aircraft later returned safely to Munich after dumping fuel, with all 271 passengers and 16 crew members reported safe.

The incident involved Vietnam Airlines flight VN34, which was operating from Munich to Hanoi. The aircraft, registered as VN-A867, took off at around 1:45 pm local time but encountered technical problems shortly after becoming airborne.

Speed Drops During Take-Off

A preliminary report from Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority (CAAV), cited by Vietnamese media, has provided details of the incident.

According to the report, the aircraft's speed stopped increasing for around two seconds when it was approximately halfway along runway 26L. The aircraft then accelerated again and reached V1, the speed at which pilots must decide whether to continue or reject a take-off.

The aircraft's speed subsequently dropped for a second time. By then, the pilots determined that there was insufficient runway remaining to safely abort the take-off.

Boeing 787 Takes Off Near Runway End

With the aircraft already committed to the departure, the crew increased engine thrust to maximum. The report said the aircraft had only about 91 metres of runway remaining when the pilot raised the nose and the Boeing 787 became airborne.

Videos circulating online appeared to show the aircraft continuing along the runway for an unusually long distance before lifting off, with dust visible behind the aircraft.

The incident has prompted investigators to examine the cause of the two speed reductions and the aircraft's take-off performance.

Tail Strike Warning Triggered

Shortly after becoming airborne, the aircraft generated warnings indicating a possible tail strike and low tyre pressure.

The crew informed air traffic control and decided to return to Munich Airport. The aircraft climbed to approximately 9,000 feet before beginning to dump fuel to reduce its weight and prepare for landing.

The plane then remained in the vicinity of Munich for more than an hour. It also made low-altitude circuits that allowed air traffic controllers to visually assess its landing gear before the aircraft returned to the airport.

Passengers Brace for Landing

Passengers quoted in local media described a tense situation inside the cabin after the captain informed them that the aircraft had developed a technical problem.

Cabin crew later instructed passengers to adopt the brace position as the aircraft prepared to land.

The Boeing 787-9 eventually landed safely on runway 26R at around 3:57 pm local time, roughly two hours after departing Munich.

Four Main Gear Tyres Burst

A preliminary inspection found that four of the aircraft's eight main landing-gear tyres had burst during the incident. Three damaged tyres were located on the left side, while one was on the right.

Investigators also discovered scrape marks on the underside of the rear fuselage and damage to the aircraft's outer skin, indicating that the tail had struck the runway during take-off.

Despite the extent of the damage, there were no reports of injuries or fire among passengers or crew.

The aircraft was unable to taxi away from the runway under its own power, temporarily affecting airport operations. It remains grounded at Munich Airport while further technical inspections are carried out.

Germany Leads Investigation

Germany's Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) is leading the investigation into the incident.

Investigators have recovered the aircraft's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. Both have been taken to the BFU headquarters in Braunschweig for examination.

Authorities are expected to investigate why the aircraft's speed dropped twice during the take-off roll and whether the issue was related to the aircraft's engines, systems, runway conditions or other operational factors.

Vietnam's CAAV is assisting German investigators. Vietnam Airlines is also cooperating with the investigation along with Boeing and the aircraft's engine manufacturer.

The investigation is expected to establish the precise sequence of events and determine what caused the aircraft to lose speed during the critical stages of its departure.

Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has detained 258 foreign nationals accused of operating an illegal call centre allegedly involved in a fake investment scam in Islamabad’s Gulberg Greens area.

According to an FIA official cited by AFP, the suspects were allegedly operating from Sparco Plaza, where investigators found what they described as a large call-centre setup. Most of those detained had reportedly entered Pakistan on tourist or visitor visas.

The detainees include 184 Vietnamese nationals, 41 Chinese nationals, 32 Indonesians and one Malaysian national, according to the FIA.

258 Foreigners Detained

The FIA’s operation targeted the alleged call centre at Sparco Plaza in Gulberg Greens, a housing society on the outskirts of Islamabad.

An FIA official said the foreign nationals had entered Pakistan on tourist visas and were not authorised to carry out the activities they were allegedly involved in.

The detainees were subsequently taken to a temporary detention facility in Rawalpindi. Their respective embassies have reportedly been informed about the arrests.

Earlier reports had put the number of Vietnamese nationals detained at 170, but the FIA’s latest figure cited in the report puts the number at 184.

How the Alleged Scam Worked

FIA Director General Usman Anwar said most of the suspects allegedly posed as women on mobile applications and online platforms to approach Pakistani citizens.

Investigators allege that the suspects first established relationships and gained the confidence of potential victims. They then allegedly introduced fake business and investment opportunities promising unusually high returns.

Victims were reportedly persuaded to transfer money after being offered lucrative investment prospects.

According to the FIA, the suspects allegedly stopped responding or disappeared after receiving money from the victims.

The agency said the premises contained a “huge call centre type business setup”, suggesting that the operation involved an organised network rather than isolated individuals.

FIR Registered Under Law

The FIA’s Anti-Human Trafficking Circle registered an FIR in connection with the case.

The case was registered under Section 14 of Pakistan’s Foreigners Act, 1946. The FIR, numbered FIR/AHTC-GL-581/28, was dated August 11, 2026, following the raid at Sparco Plaza.

Investigators subsequently checked the details of the detained foreign nationals against Pakistan’s Integrated Border Management System.

Officials said most of the suspects had entered Pakistan using visitor visas.

Sparco Plaza Made Temporary Jail

Following the arrests, the Chief Commissioner of Islamabad Capital Territory issued an order on August 11 designating Sparco Plaza as a temporary “Sub-Jail/Lock-Up” for the detained foreign nationals.

The order was issued under provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Prisons Act, 1894.

Responsibility for securing the temporary detention facility and the people held there was assigned to the FIA’s Director General.

The unusual arrangement was made to accommodate the large number of foreign nationals detained during the operation.

Embassies Informed

The foreign nationals include people from four countries, with Vietnamese nationals forming the largest group.

The FIA has informed the respective embassies about the arrests, according to the report.

The development could also draw attention from the countries whose citizens have been detained, particularly given the large number of Chinese and Vietnamese nationals involved.

However, the specific roles allegedly played by individual detainees have not yet been established.

Investigation Underway

The FIA investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are examining the alleged operation, the identities and roles of those detained and the financial activities linked to the suspected call centre.

Investigators are also expected to determine how the alleged investment scheme operated, how potential victims were approached and whether additional people were involved.

The allegations against the detainees have not yet been individually established, and the investigation is continuing.

The case highlights the growing use of online platforms and social engineering techniques in alleged investment fraud, with investigators now focusing on establishing the full scale and structure of the operation.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Lam discussed closer bilateral coordination amid growing geopolitical and economic uncertainty in the Indo-Pacific.

The two sides also agreed to increase cooperation in critical minerals, semiconductors and clean energy, while expressing concern over trade practices that can disrupt global supply chains.

New Maritime Security Agreement

A Vietnamese cargo vessel sank in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, leaving 23 crew members missing, while rescue teams continue a large-scale search operation involving Chinese and Vietnamese authorities.

Vietnamese authorities have detained the captain of a tourist speedboat and initiated a criminal investigation following the tragic boat accident near Phu Quoc Island that claimed the lives of 15 Indian tourists. The move comes a day after one of the deadliest incidents involving Indian travellers overseas in recent years.

According to Vietnamese authorities, the captain has been taken into custody on allegations of violating inland waterway safety regulations, while investigators examine the circumstances that led to the fatal capsizing of the vessel. 

Captain Under Criminal Investigation

Police in Vietnam's An Giang province confirmed that criminal proceedings have been initiated against the captain as part of a formal investigation into the disaster.

Authorities are examining whether safety protocols, navigation procedures and operational guidelines were followed before the vessel departed. Investigators are also reviewing weather conditions, the boat's technical status and crew actions leading up to the accident. 

Boat Capsized Near Phu Quoc

The accident occurred on July 11 when the tourist speedboat, carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members, capsized shortly after departing Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, near the popular tourist destination of Phu Quoc in southern Vietnam.

Officials said the vessel overturned less than 500 metres from the shore. Rescue teams, including emergency boats and jet skis, rushed to the scene and managed to pull survivors from the water despite rough sea conditions. 

Fifteen Indians Killed

The tragedy claimed the lives of 15 Indian nationals, while the remaining passengers were rescued, although several sustained injuries. One survivor remains in critical condition, according to local authorities.

Most of the victims were reportedly from the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, and were part of a company-sponsored trip organised by Indian electronics manufacturer Lava International. 

Weather and Safety Under Scrutiny

Preliminary reports indicate that rough seas and high waves complicated rescue operations. Witnesses said the weather deteriorated rapidly after the vessel left the island, causing the boat to overturn within moments.

Survivors have also raised concerns over the availability of emergency medical facilities and rescue preparedness at the nearby tourist destination, issues that are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.

Vietnamese rescue teams have been deployed to the area, where operations are underway to locate missing passengers and ensure the safety of those rescued.
