Rewa Waterfalls: Police Warn Against Dangerous Selfies and Reels During Monsoon

Tourists visiting Rewa's famous waterfalls are risking their lives for selfies and social media reels. Police have announced stricter monitoring and appealed to visitors to follow safety guidelines during the monsoon season.

With the monsoon transforming Rewa's waterfalls into major tourist attractions, authorities have expressed concern over a growing trend of visitors risking their lives to capture selfies and social media reels from dangerous locations. Police have warned that stricter monitoring and enforcement will be introduced after repeated instances of tourists ignoring safety barriers to create online content.

Popular waterfalls, including Keoti (Keoti Falls), Chachai, Purwa, Itma, Bahuti and Odda, have witnessed a sharp rise in tourist footfall following recent rainfall. While visitors are flocking to enjoy the scenic beauty, many are venturing onto slippery rocks, cliff edges and areas with strong water currents in search of dramatic photographs and videos.

Social Media Craze Raises Safety Concerns

Officials say the increasing popularity of short-form video platforms has encouraged many tourists to take unnecessary risks for likes, views and followers. Several visitors have been seen standing on wet rock formations, sitting close to flowing streams or filming reels near steep drops despite visible danger.

The monsoon season makes these locations particularly hazardous, as water levels can rise suddenly and algae-covered rocks become extremely slippery, significantly increasing the risk of falls.

Visitors Ignoring Safety Warnings

According to local authorities, despite warning boards and barricades at several tourist spots, many visitors continue to cross restricted zones. Holiday weekends witness especially heavy crowds, making it more challenging for authorities to monitor every location.

Tourists have also been observed climbing beyond designated viewing areas at Bahuti and Odda waterfalls, where the force of the flowing water becomes stronger during heavy rains.

Officials have repeatedly urged visitors to remain within safe viewing areas and avoid entering restricted sections.

Limited Safety Infrastructure

Local residents have pointed out that several waterfalls in the district still lack adequate safety infrastructure. Permanent railings are absent at many dangerous viewpoints, while existing barricades and warning signs are often ignored or insufficient to prevent access to hazardous areas.

Residents have demanded stronger protective railings, expanded barricading, additional warning signage and continuous surveillance at major tourist destinations, particularly during the peak monsoon season when visitor numbers increase substantially.

Police to Intensify Monitoring

Additional Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mishra said authorities are closely monitoring tourist activity at major waterfalls and will strengthen enforcement wherever required.

He warned that water flow can increase without notice during the rainy season, making seemingly safe spots highly dangerous within minutes.

"Tourists should avoid venturing into restricted areas for selfies or reels and must strictly follow safety barricades. Police are continuously monitoring these locations, and any negligence can prove fatal," Mishra said.

He also appealed to families visiting waterfalls to supervise children carefully and enjoy the natural beauty only from designated safe zones.

Authorities Appeal for Responsible Tourism

Officials have urged visitors to prioritise personal safety over social media content, stressing that no photograph or video is worth risking a life. They have appealed to tourists to cooperate with local authorities, respect safety restrictions and report unsafe behaviour whenever noticed.

With monsoon tourism expected to remain at its peak in the coming weeks, district authorities are considering additional preventive measures to minimise the possibility of accidents at Rewa's popular waterfalls.
