Home Guard's Son From Begusarai Becomes SDM on Second Attempt, Turning Down No Coaching Institute for Self-Study

At 24, Kumar Vishwajeet has just secured one of Bihar's most sought-after administrative postings — and he did it without ever leaving his village for a coaching institute.

A resident of Kharhat village in Begusarai district's Sahebpur Kamal block, Vishwajeet secured rank 281 in the Bihar Public Service Commission's 70th Combined Competitive Examination, earning selection as a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). For a young man raised in a modest household with limited resources, the result marks the end of a long, quiet grind — and this wasn't even his first attempt.

Vishwajeet's father, Shambhu Sharan Rai, is a retired home guard jawan; his mother is a homemaker. Neither the family's means nor its location gave him any particular advantage in a notoriously competitive exam that draws hundreds of thousands of aspirants each cycle. His first attempt at the BPSC exam ended in failure. Rather than treating that setback as a verdict, he used it to rework his approach — adjusting his preparation strategy before going in again. The second attempt landed him directly at the SDM post, a significant jump from where his first try had left him.

Vishwajeet's success came alongside another notable story from the same district. Raju Kumar, from Malmalla village in Begusarai's Khodavandpur block, secured rank 72 in the same exam and was selected for the higher-profile post of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) — on his first attempt. Kumar had lost his father, the late Kailash Mahto, and had previously worked a Group-D government job before deciding to prepare for the BPSC exam. He studied entirely through self-discipline at home, without moving to a bigger city or enrolling in an expensive coaching institute. When the results came in, his mother Rekha Devi and his elder brother Rahul Kumar, who works as a daily-wage labourer, were reported to have been moved to tears.

News of both selections spread quickly once it reached Begusarai's collectorate offices and made its way out to the two young men's home villages. Residents came out with drums and gulal to celebrate, turning both results into a shared moment of pride for the district rather than just a personal milestone for either family.

Local officials and educators who commented on the results pointed to both stories as proof that neither financial background nor geography needs to be a barrier to India's toughest competitive exams — provided the discipline and self-belief hold up over repeated attempts.
