Prashant Kishor's election affidavit for the Bankipur bypoll has offered the public its first detailed look at the Jan Suraaj founder's personal finances — and it turns out his wife is considerably richer than he is.

According to the affidavit filed alongside his nomination papers on Monday, Kishor has declared total movable and immovable assets worth more than ₹96.06 crore, split between ₹22.19 crore in movable assets and ₹73.87 crore in immovable holdings. He also holds a 100 percent controlling stake in a private company and has declared cash in hand of ₹65,570.

His wife, Jahnavi Das, a medical practitioner from Assam, turns out to hold even greater wealth on paper — ₹89.51 crore in movable assets and ₹12.42 crore in immovable assets, along with ₹1,95,200 in cash, putting her combined declared assets above her husband's.

The affidavit also lays out Kishor's academic history in detail: Class 10 from M.P. High School in Buxar in 1991, Class 12 from Patna Science College in 1993, a Bachelor of Business Administration from Lucknow University between 1996 and 1999, and a Master of Health Administration from Hyderabad between 2001 and 2003. It further notes that he studied French in 2010 at CAVILAM in Vichy, France, an institution affiliated with the University of Clermont-Ferrand.

Kishor filed his nomination on Monday after leading a padyatra through Patna, accompanied by his wife, senior Jan Suraaj leaders and a large group of supporters. Before filing, he offered prayers at the Baba Hariharnath Temple in Sonepur, then led a procession from the Scout and Guide Ground near Sinha Library to the district collectorate. Speaking to reporters, he described the moment as more than a routine nomination, framing his candidacy as a call for political change in Bihar and specifically calling for candidates with criminal records to step aside from public office.

His nomination filing came the same day as BJP candidate Neeraj Sinha's, with both submissions accompanied by considerable political activity and attention in Patna. The Bankipur seat fell vacant after BJP national president Nitin Nabin, who had won the seat comfortably in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, resigned as MLA following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

Election affidavits of this kind are a mandatory statutory disclosure under Indian election rules, intended to give voters a clear picture of a candidate's financial background, education and other relevant details ahead of polling. With Kishor now a declared candidate in what was previously considered a safe BJP seat, Bankipur's July 30 contest is shaping up to be one of the more closely watched bypolls in Bihar this cycle.

Prashant Kishor Files Nomination for Bankipur Bypoll, Sets Up Three-Way Fight With BJP and RJD

Prashant Kishor made his long-awaited transition from political strategist to actual candidate on Monday, filing his nomination papers for the Bankipur assembly bypoll in Patna — the last day permitted under the Election Commission's schedule for the seat.

The Jan Suraaj Party founder arrived at the Patna Sadar sub-divisional office after his supporters gathered earlier in the morning at the Scout and Guide Ground in Chhajjubagh, with the party organizing the filing as a show of public support. It marks Kishor's first-ever run for elected office, after years spent shaping other parties' campaigns as a strategist. He has described the contest as effectively a referendum on the performance of the BJP-led state government since the November 2025 assembly elections.

The Bankipur seat fell vacant after sitting BJP MLA and party national president Nitin Nabin resigned following his election to the Rajya Sabha in April. The constituency has been a BJP stronghold going back to the 1990s, making the party's handling of its own candidacy this time somewhat unusual: the BJP's original nominee withdrew from the race citing family reasons shortly after being selected, prompting the party to name Neeraj Kumar Sinha as its replacement candidate. Kishor seized on the switch, arguing it showed the BJP "struggling to find a candidate" in a seat it had long treated as safe, and accused the party of failing to deliver on the change it had promised voters in the last election cycle.

The RJD, meanwhile, has re-nominated Rekha Gupta, who contested and lost the seat to Nabin in the 2025 assembly election by a wide margin, securing under 30 percent of the vote at the time. Announcing her renewed candidacy, Gupta expressed confidence the RJD would perform better this time, citing what she described as public dissatisfaction with the state government, and argued Bankipur's voters should give the seat to a woman candidate after decades of BJP representation. She was also dismissive of Kishor's candidacy specifically, arguing that being a successful strategist for other campaigns doesn't necessarily translate into being a successful candidate oneself.

Congress and RJD, allies within the INDIA bloc, remain divided over how to treat Kishor's entry into the race. A Congress leader had suggested the opposition alliance should consider backing Kishor to maximise pressure on the BJP, a suggestion the RJD publicly dismissed as an individual opinion rather than any official party position, reaffirming that the RJD would contest the seat on its own as it did in 2025.

Beyond the three main contenders, the field also includes Veena Manvi, fielded by Tej Pratap Yadav's Janshakti Janata Dal, whose own nomination filing was disrupted by her arrest over the weekend.

With nominations now closed, scrutiny of papers is scheduled for July 14, followed by the last date for withdrawal on July 16. Counting will take place on August 3, following polling on July 30.

Bankipur Bypoll Candidate Veena Manvi Arrested at Nomination, Calls It a Political Conspiracy

Bihar's Bankipur bypoll turned chaotic on Sunday when Veena Manvi, the Janshakti Janata Dal's candidate for the seat, was arrested by police just as she arrived to file her nomination papers in Patna.

Police took Manvi into custody at the nomination site and moved her to the Gandhi Maidan police station, according to Aaj Tak. Speaking after her arrest, Manvi alleged that a political conspiracy had been engineered against her, though the specific grounds for the arrest were not detailed in the initial reporting. Her daughter has separately made serious allegations against unnamed political leaders in connection with the episode, though the substance of those allegations was not immediately available.

Manvi, a Patna-based social activist and president of the Mahila Vikas Manch, was named as the JJD's candidate for Bankipur on July 1 by party president Tej Pratap Yadav, the expelled former RJD leader and Bihar's former state minister who launched the party after his removal from the RJD by his father, Lalu Prasad, last year. Announcing her candidacy, Yadav had described Manvi as someone who had worked hard for the constituency in her capacity as a social worker, and noted she came from the Vaishya community — a group he said the BJP had long courted, positioning her as a deliberate counter to the ruling party's traditional base in the seat.

The Bankipur seat fell vacant after sitting MLA and BJP national president Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha. Nabin had held the seat for five consecutive terms, most recently winning by a margin of nearly 50,000 votes in the 2025 assembly election, making Bankipur a long-standing BJP stronghold. The bypoll has already drawn other high-profile contenders, including Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor, who is contesting the seat himself in what he has called a referendum on the state government. The BJP had not finalised its own candidate as of the last update, with names including Ajay Alok and Neel Ratan Ghosh reportedly under consideration.

Manvi's arrest, coming on the day of nominations, adds a volatile new element to what was already shaping up as a closely watched three-cornered contest. Neither the Patna police nor the JJD had issued a detailed statement on the reason for her arrest at the time of publishing, and further details on both the charges involved and her daughter's allegations remain awaited.
