MP Weather Update: Monsoon Takes 3-Day Break, New System Likely to Bring Heavy Rain From September 12

Madhya Pradesh is witnessing a temporary slowdown in monsoon activity, with no heavy rainfall forecast till September 11. A new low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may revive rainfall from September 12.

The monsoon has taken a brief break in Madhya Pradesh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting no spell of heavy or very heavy rainfall in the state until September 11.According to the weather department, a low-pressure area is expected to develop over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal on September 11, with its impact likely to be visible across Madhya Pradesh from September 12.During the next three days, scattered light rainfall is expected in some parts of the state. However, local weather systems and sufficient moisture could trigger isolated spells of heavier rain in some districts.

Most parts of MP see clear skies

The latest satellite images released by the IMD showed reduced cloud cover over most parts of Madhya Pradesh. Several districts, including Bhopal, witnessed bright sunshine on Tuesday.Light rain and cloudy conditions were reported in areas such as Sheopur, Ujjain, Indore, Dhar, Khargone and Barwani.Meteorologists said the absence of an active weather system is the main reason behind the current slowdown in rainfall activity.

Heavy rain alert for four districts on September 12

Weather scientist Arun Sharma said the state currently does not have any active system supporting widespread rainfall.According to the forecast, heavy rainfall is likely in Chhatarpur, Panna, Damoh and Katni on September 12 as the new system begins affecting the region.

MP receives 31.2 inches rainfall so far

Madhya Pradesh has received around 31.2 inches of rainfall so far during the monsoon season. However, the state is still about 6 per cent below the seasonal average.The normal rainfall for Madhya Pradesh is around 37.3 inches.The eastern parts of the state, including areas under Jabalpur, Rewa, Sagar and Shahdol divisions, have recorded rainfall close to normal, while several western districts continue to remain below average.

Rain deficit continues in several districts

According to weather data, districts including Alirajpur, Ashoknagar, Betul, Dewas, Dhar, Indore, Jhabua, Khandwa, Mandsaur, Morena, Narmadapuram, Neemuch, Barwani, Raisen, Ratlam, Sehore, Shajapur, Ujjain and Vidisha have recorded rainfall deficits ranging from 7 per cent to 55 per cent.At the same time, several districts including Bhopal, Gwalior, Khargone, Shivpuri, Sheopur and Satna have received above-average rainfall.

Monsoon trend this season

The state witnessed a weak start to the monsoon, with June recording around 14 per cent less rainfall than normal.Rainfall improved during July and August due to active weather systems, but repeated breaks in monsoon activity prevented full recovery of the deficit. Overall rainfall remains around 6 per cent below normal.The next major update will depend on the movement and strength of the low-pressure system expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal.

Chhattisgarh Weather Update: Rain Activity Likely to Increase From September 10 as Low Pressure Forms Over Bay of Bengal

Rainfall activity has reduced in Chhattisgarh for now, but weather conditions may change in the next two to three days as a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal.

Weather conditions in Chhattisgarh are expected to change in the next two to three days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting an increase in rainfall activity from September 10.According to the weather department, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal around September 11. The system may influence weather patterns in Chhattisgarh and bring rainfall to several parts of the state.At present, monsoon activity remains weak across the state. However, scattered light rainfall has been reported in some areas during the last 24 hours.

Light rain recorded in some districts

During the previous 24 hours, Dharamjaigarh in Raigarh district recorded around 10 mm rainfall, while most other areas received light or very light showers.The highest temperature in the state was recorded in Rajnandgaon at 34.5°C. The lowest temperature was recorded at Pendra Road and Durg at 21.4°C.

Raipur weather forecast

In Raipur, the sky is expected to remain generally cloudy on September 9. The city may witness one or two spells of rain or thundershowers during the day.The maximum temperature in Raipur is likely to remain around 33°C, while the minimum temperature may stay near 26°C.

Chhattisgarh rainfall remains 6% below normal

The state has received around 952.2 mm (37.5 inches) rainfall between June 1 and September 8, against the normal rainfall of 1008.2 mm (39.7 inches) during the same period.This means rainfall in Chhattisgarh is currently around 6% below normal, which falls under the normal category as per weather department classification.However, rainfall distribution across districts has remained uneven.Out of the state’s 33 districts, around 18 districts have recorded below-normal rainfall, while 15 districts have received normal or above-normal rainfall.

Balrampur records highest surplus rainfall

Balrampur district has received the highest rainfall surplus so far. The district recorded 1442.3 mm rainfall, compared to the normal 864.1 mm, marking a 67% increase above normal.

Other districts with above-average rainfall include:

Sarangarh-Bilaigarh: 35% above normal
Mungeli: 26% above normal
Raipur: 18% above normal
Balodabazar and Narayanpur: 17% above normal

Bemetara faces biggest rainfall deficit

Bemetara has recorded the highest rainfall deficit in the state.The district received 540.4 mm rainfall against the normal 926.2 mm, resulting in a 42% shortage.

Other districts facing significant rainfall deficiency include:

Kanker: 39% below normal
Surguja: 39% below normal
Jashpur: 35% below normal
Kabirdham and Kondagaon: 22% below normal

The impact of the upcoming Bay of Bengal weather system will determine whether the rainfall deficit improves in the coming days.

Monsoon Weakens in Madhya Pradesh, Rain Activity Expected to Pick Up After July 16

According to the India Meteorological Department, only light rain or drizzle is expected across 22 districts on Monday, while major cities including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior and Jabalpur are likely to see mostly sunny, dry weather. Weather officials said nearly 60 percent of the state is currently experiencing reduced monsoon cloud cover, and no heavy or very heavy rainfall has been recorded anywhere in Madhya Pradesh over the past four to five days.

Shailendra Kumar Naik, a weather expert at the Meteorological Centre in Bhopal, said the southwest monsoon's activity over the state is currently decreasing, with the weather systems that typically drive monsoon rainfall having either weakened or shifted away from the region.

The timing is significant. July normally accounts for close to a third of Madhya Pradesh's total seasonal rainfall, with Bhopal alone expecting around 14 inches of its 39-inch seasonal average to fall this month. Rainfall on the ground so far has been uneven: Dewas leads the state with 18 inches, more than double its normal for this point in the season, while Indore and Sehore have each logged 14 inches and Bhopal sits at 13.1 inches. At the other end, Alirajpur has managed just 2.5 inches, 74 percent below what's normal for the district, with Jabalpur, Sagar, Rewa and Shivpuri also trailing behind their usual totals.

There's a possible turnaround on the horizon. The IMD is tracking a cyclonic circulation expected to form over the northern Bay of Bengal between July 13 and 19, which could reactivate rainfall across the state if it strengthens into a low-pressure system. Naik said the effects of any such system would likely become visible from July 16 onward, bringing a fresh spell of rain back to the state.

The lull follows an already uneven start to the season. Madhya Pradesh recorded below-normal rainfall in June, and the IMD's pre-monsoon forecast in April had flagged the state as one of several across central and western India facing an elevated chance of below-normal rainfall this year, with some districts carrying as much as a 50 percent probability of falling short. That forecast also warned of a delayed monsoon onset, which compressed the sowing window for Kharif crops in several districts.

For now, farmers and residents across the state are watching the same system meteorologists are — whether the Bay of Bengal disturbance materialises in time to make up the ground lost over the past several dry days.
