After 10 Years of Failure, Govind Kumar Cracked UPPSC PCS; IAS Avnish Sharan’s Journey Offers Another Lesson in Perseverance

For thousands of civil services aspirants, repeated failure often signals the end of a dream. For Uttar Pradesh's Govind Kumar, however, it became the foundation of an eventual success that took more than a decade to achieve.

Govind Kumar's story has once again come into focus after his remarkable journey—from repeated setbacks in the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) examinations to finally becoming a Provincial Civil Services (PCS) officer—was highlighted as an example of perseverance. His experience has also drawn comparisons with Chhattisgarh-cadre IAS officer Avnish Sharan, who overcame multiple competitive exam failures before securing an All India Rank of 77 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

According to Govind Kumar, his preparation stretched over nearly 13 years, during which he repeatedly fell short at different stages of the UPPSC recruitment process. There were occasions when he could not clear the written examination, while on several others he reached the interview stage only to miss final selection. As the years passed and the upper age limit approached, uncertainty over his future continued to grow.

The breakthrough finally came with the UPPSC PCS-2015 recruitment process, when Govind secured selection after years of persistence. Looking back on his journey, he recalled that there were moments when he believed his dream had ended, but he continued preparing despite repeated disappointments. His eventual success transformed years of struggle into an inspiring example for competitive examination aspirants across the country.

The story also echoes the career of IAS officer Avnish Sharan, who has often spoken publicly about his own failures before entering the Indian Administrative Service.

Sharan has shared that he scored only 44.7 percent marks in Class 10 and around 65 percent in Class 12. During his preparation years, he unsuccessfully attempted several competitive examinations, including multiple State PCS examinations, the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination and the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruitment process. Even his first attempt at the UPSC Civil Services Examination ended with disappointment after reaching the interview stage.

Rather than abandoning his goal, Sharan continued working on his weaknesses and appeared again for the Civil Services Examination. His persistence paid off in 2009 when he secured All India Rank 77 and joined the Indian Administrative Service as an officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre. Over the years, he has frequently used social media to remind aspirants that setbacks should not define their careers.

Both stories have resonated strongly within the competitive examination community because they challenge the belief that success must come quickly. For many candidates preparing for UPSC and State Public Service Commission examinations, repeated failures often create financial pressure, emotional stress and uncertainty about continuing preparation.

Education experts have long maintained that competitive examinations demand consistency over several years and that setbacks at one stage do not necessarily determine future outcomes. While every aspirant's journey is different, the experiences of Govind Kumar and Avnish Sharan highlight how resilience and sustained preparation can eventually lead to success.

As fresh recruitment cycles for UPSC and State Civil Services examinations continue, these stories are once again circulating among aspirants, offering encouragement to candidates facing repeated setbacks. Their journeys underline a simple but powerful message: persistence can sometimes become the deciding factor between failure and achieving a long-held dream.
