Quick commerce platform Swiggy Instamart has entered the LPG delivery segment through a partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), enabling customers to order cooking gas cylinders directly through the Instamart app. The service, launched on July 15, is being rolled out initially in Bengaluru, with deliveries expected within 30 to 45 minutes.

The collaboration is being described as India's first partnership between a quick commerce platform and a public sector oil marketing company for on-demand LPG cylinder delivery. The initiative aims to make access to smaller LPG cylinders faster and more convenient, particularly for urban consumers and people requiring immediate cooking fuel.

Two Cylinder Options Available

Under the new service, customers can order two HPCL LPG products through the Instamart application. These include the recently launched 10-kg HP Navya composite LPG cylinder, designed to be lighter and easier to handle, and the 5-kg traditional steel LPG cylinder.

The service is intended for consumers looking for portable LPG solutions rather than standard domestic 14.2-kg household cylinders.

No Existing LPG Connection Required

One of the key features of the initiative is that customers do not need to possess an existing domestic LPG connection to place an order.

According to the companies, first-time buyers can purchase a cylinder directly through the app after completing identity verification and submitting the required delivery documentation. This is expected to benefit students, working professionals, tenants and individuals who have recently relocated to a new city and require immediate access to cooking gas.

How the Ordering Process Works

For first-time purchases, customers will be required to complete Know Your Customer (KYC) verification during the delivery process.

For subsequent refills, users will need to hand over their empty HPCL cylinder to the authorised delivery executive while receiving the refilled cylinder, following the standard LPG exchange system.

The companies clarified that the LPG cylinders remain HPCL products, while Swiggy Instamart serves only as the digital ordering and delivery platform.

Pricing Yet to Be Announced

HPCL and Swiggy have not disclosed the pricing of either the 10-kg composite cylinder or the 5-kg steel cylinder through the app.

Officials indicated that cylinder prices will continue to follow HPCL's prescribed rates and applicable government norms. Additional convenience or delivery charges, if any, will be displayed within the Instamart application at the time of booking.

Safety Protocols Remain Unchanged

The companies have emphasised that safety standards will remain identical to conventional LPG distribution.

Deliveries will not be handled by regular Swiggy delivery partners. Instead, all LPG cylinders will be supplied through HPCL's authorised distributor network and delivered by trained personnel responsible for complying with existing safety and regulatory requirements.

This arrangement is intended to ensure that handling, transportation and customer verification continue to follow established petroleum safety norms.

Expanding Quick Commerce Services

HPCL said the partnership reflects changing consumer preferences, with urban customers increasingly expecting faster access to essential household products through digital platforms.

Swiggy Instamart, which currently operates in more than 130 cities, has steadily expanded beyond grocery deliveries into categories such as electronics, medicines, home essentials and now cooking fuel.

Industry observers believe the initiative could redefine last-mile LPG distribution in urban India if the Bengaluru pilot proves successful.

The launch may also encourage other oil marketing companies, including Indane and Bharatgas, to explore similar partnerships with quick commerce platforms such as Blinkit and Zepto, further accelerating the digital transformation of essential utility services.
