Russia's maritime logistics have come under renewed pressure after a series of Ukrainian drone attacks disrupted shipping operations in the Sea of Azov, forcing Moscow to temporarily halt vessel movement through key waterways. The development has raised concerns over Russian exports of oil, wheat and other commodities, drawing comparisons to recent disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Ukrainian officials, drones have targeted 116 Russian vessels over the past nine days in and around the Sea of Azov. While the claim has not been independently verified, the attacks have reportedly prompted Russian authorities to suspend navigation through two strategically important maritime corridors.

Key shipping routes affected

The affected routes include the Don-Azov Channel, which connects the Sea of Azov with Russia's inland river network, and the Kerch Strait, the narrow passage linking the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea.

Satellite imagery and commercial ship-tracking platforms indicate that numerous vessels remain anchored on both sides of these waterways, awaiting clearance to resume operations. The disruption is expected to slow the movement of commercial cargo and affect Russia's maritime supply chain.

Exports face fresh uncertainty

The Sea of Azov plays a vital role in Russia's export network. The route is used to transport crude oil, wheat, sunflower oil, steel and other commodities from southern Russia to international markets through the Black Sea.

Industry analysts warn that prolonged disruption could impact not only Russia's energy exports but also shipments of agricultural products that are not covered by Western sanctions. Reports suggest that nearly 25% of Russia's wheat exports normally move through the Sea of Azov.

As uncertainty grows, international wheat futures have reportedly edged higher amid concerns over possible supply disruptions.

Ukraine expands maritime campaign

Since the start of the conflict, Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drones to target Russian military and logistical infrastructure. Earlier attacks primarily focused on Russia's naval assets and so-called shadow fleet oil tankers, but recent operations appear to have expanded to commercial maritime traffic supporting Russian logistics.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has assessed that Ukraine's strategy aims to weaken Russian supply lines linked to Crimea while disrupting maritime exports that generate revenue for Moscow.

Russia explores alternative ports

Russian authorities have maintained that exports can be rerouted through other Black Sea ports. However, shipping experts argue that existing infrastructure may not have sufficient capacity to fully replace the Sea of Azov during the peak export season, particularly for grain shipments.

The disruption comes at a time when global supply chains remain sensitive to geopolitical tensions, raising concerns about further volatility in commodity markets if the situation persists.

The Sea of Azov is a strategically important inland sea shared by Russia and Ukraine, connected to the Black Sea through the Kerch Strait. Following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow gained control over much of the Ukrainian coastline surrounding the sea.

Beyond its military significance, the waterway serves as a critical economic corridor linking southern Russia with global trade routes through an extensive network of rivers and canals developed during the Soviet era.
