An elderly woman was rescued from a locked room in Madhya Pradesh's Agar Malwa district after neighbours alerted local authorities, alleging that she had been confined by two of her sons for nearly two months. The incident came to light on Friday in the Kalyan Jin area of Ward No. 5 in Susner town.

Following the complaint, local public representatives and police reached the spot and got the room unlocked. The elderly woman was later taken to the police station, where discussions were held with family members before she was handed over to her third son with the consent of all parties.

Neighbours Alert Authorities

According to officials, neighbours informed Municipal Council President Pradeep Soni and councillor representative Pawan Sharma about the alleged confinement. When they reached the house, family members reportedly refused to hand over the room's key, prompting them to call the police.

Police subsequently intervened, got the lock opened and brought the elderly woman, identified as Kaushalya Bai, out of the room. Her two sons and their wives were also called to the police station for questioning.

Conflicting Claims Over Woman's Health

During the inquiry, family members claimed that the elderly woman was suffering from mental health issues and had a habit of leaving the house without informing anyone. They maintained that she was kept indoors for her own safety.

However, councillor representative Pawan Sharma disputed the claim, stating that the woman appeared mentally alert and was able to identify herself and her family members during the interaction.

Food Was Being Provided, Say Locals

Municipal Council President Pradeep Soni said neighbours alleged that the woman had been staying inside the room for nearly two months. While they claimed that food and other basic necessities were being provided regularly, concerns over her prolonged confinement prompted them to report the matter.

Handed Over to Third Son

After discussions at the police station, both sides agreed that the elderly woman would stay with her third son, Ganesh. Police said the matter was resolved through mutual consent, and no information has been shared regarding the registration of a criminal case so far.

Officials said they would continue to monitor the situation if required.
