Sidhi University Demand Gains Momentum Ahead of Assembly Session; Students Submit Memorandum to MLA Reeti Pathak

The long-standing demand for the establishment of a separate university in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district has gained fresh momentum ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of the State Assembly. A delegation of students met Sidhi MLA Reeti Pathak on Sunday and submitted a memorandum urging her to raise the issue in the Assembly and push for concrete steps towards setting up a university in the district.

The students said the demand has been pending for nearly five to six years and stressed that the growing educational needs of Sidhi and nearby regions now require a dedicated university. They argued that the absence of a local university forces many students to migrate to other cities for higher education, increasing both financial and logistical burdens on families.

Students Highlight Higher Education Challenges

During the meeting, the student representatives explained that while a large number of students in Sidhi pursue undergraduate studies, opportunities for postgraduate education, research, and specialized courses remain limited. As a result, many are compelled to relocate to cities such as Rewa, Jabalpur, Bhopal, or other university hubs.

The delegation requested MLA Reeti Pathak to raise the issue prominently during the Assembly session so that the proposal moves beyond discussions and reaches the policy-making stage.

According to the students, the MLA listened to their concerns and acknowledged the need for a university in Sidhi. They claimed she assured them that she would make efforts to take the matter forward through appropriate government channels.

Demand Backed by Student Representatives

Student representative Indralal Patel said the campaign for a university is not limited to one institution or student group but represents the educational aspirations of the entire district.

He added that the delegation has already approached several MLAs and public representatives across the district to seek support for the proposal. The students believe that a united effort by elected representatives would strengthen the demand before the state government.

They have also appealed to all legislators from the region to collectively advocate for the establishment of a university during the Assembly session.

Long-Pending Issue

The demand for a university in Sidhi is not new. Students and education stakeholders have been raising the issue through various forums for several years.

Supporters of the proposal argue that the district has witnessed steady growth in higher education enrollment, but access to university-level infrastructure and academic programmes has not expanded at the same pace.

Students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds often struggle with the costs of accommodation, transportation, and living expenses when pursuing higher education outside the district.

They believe that establishing a university locally would improve access to quality education while reducing the financial burden on families.

Potential Benefits

According to the student delegation, a university in Sidhi could offer multiple long-term benefits beyond conventional undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

They said it could pave the way for:

Research and innovation centres

Professional and technical education

Skill development programmes

Employment-oriented academic courses

Improved academic administration for affiliated colleges

Students also believe that a university would help strengthen existing colleges in the district and reduce dependence on institutions located in other regions for academic and administrative processes.

However, they acknowledged that the establishment of a university would require government approval, budgetary allocation, land acquisition, infrastructure development, and administrative planning.

Focus Ahead of Assembly Session

With the Madhya Pradesh Assembly's Monsoon Session set to begin shortly, students see this as a crucial opportunity to revive the issue at the legislative level.

They urged policymakers to move beyond assurances and initiate formal procedures for evaluating the feasibility of establishing a university in Sidhi.

The memorandum was submitted by a large group of students, including Indralal Patel, Jyoti Patel, Harshit Tiwari, Akash Vishwakarma, Aanchal Patel, Nilesh Vishwakarma, Mahendra Kumar Jogi, Rakesh Yadav, Divyansh Patel, Shailendra Yadav, Meenu Panika, Priyanka Singh, Deepika Areliya, Ankit Patel, Omkaleshwar Patel, Riya Tiwari, Kanchan Patel, Shivendra Patel, Sheetal Saket, and Ankit Chaurasia, among others.

As the Assembly session approaches, students hope their renewed campaign will encourage the state government to take concrete steps towards expanding higher education infrastructure in the Vindhya region.
