Madhya Pradesh is preparing for a major overhaul of its medical education system, with the state government planning to establish a second government medical university in Ujjain. A proposal for the new university has been prepared following an initiative by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. If approved, the university will oversee a large number of medical, dental, nursing, AYUSH and other health science institutions, easing the administrative burden currently handled by the Medical University in Jabalpur.

The move comes as the number of medical and allied health institutions in the state has grown significantly over the past few years. With new government and private medical colleges, nursing institutes, dental colleges and paramedical institutions being established, the existing university in Jabalpur has witnessed a substantial increase in responsibilities related to academic administration, examinations, affiliations and result processing.

Administrative Responsibilities to Be Shared

According to the proposal, the new Ujjain Medical University will be responsible for institutions located in six divisions—Indore, Bhopal, Ujjain, Gwalior, Narmadapuram and Chambal. Meanwhile, the Jabalpur-based medical university is expected to continue managing institutions in Mahakoshal, Vindhya, Rewa, Shahdol and Sagar divisions.

The proposed division is intended to distribute academic and administrative responsibilities more efficiently, ensuring smoother functioning of both universities.

Relief for Jabalpur Medical University

At present, the Medical University in Jabalpur manages affiliations, examinations, academic regulations and results for a vast network of medical and health science institutions across Madhya Pradesh. Officials believe that the growing number of colleges has significantly increased the workload.

The creation of a second university is expected to improve administrative efficiency, reduce delays in examination schedules and declaration of results, and provide better academic support to affiliated institutions.

Improved Examination and Academic Management

Medical education involves multiple professional courses, each requiring separate examination schedules, evaluations and result processing. With responsibilities divided between two universities, authorities expect faster examination management and timely publication of results.

Students are also likely to benefit from more streamlined academic processes, helping avoid delays that can affect internships, admissions to higher studies and professional registrations.

Boost for Research and Health Education

Beyond examinations and affiliations, the proposed university is expected to promote medical research, faculty development and academic collaboration among institutions under its jurisdiction.

Officials believe that a dedicated university for western and central Madhya Pradesh could strengthen research initiatives, encourage innovation in medical education and facilitate better coordination among colleges.

Ujjain to Emerge as a Medical Education Hub

If approved, Ujjain will become an important administrative centre for medical education in the state. The city already has a growing educational infrastructure, and the establishment of a government medical university could further enhance its role in higher education and healthcare administration.

The proposal is also expected to support the state's long-term objective of expanding medical education alongside the rapid increase in medical colleges and healthcare institutions.

Further Decisions Await Government Approval

While the proposal has been prepared, details regarding the university's campus, budget, administrative structure, staffing and timeline for establishment are yet to be finalised.

Once the proposal receives formal approval, the government will define the jurisdiction of both universities, determine the transfer of affiliated institutions and establish the administrative framework required for the new university.

The initiative is being viewed as a significant step towards strengthening medical education governance in Madhya Pradesh and ensuring more efficient management of the state's expanding healthcare education network.
