The United States has approved the sale of 5,250 Patriot missile interceptors to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates as demand for the advanced air-defence system rises amid escalating tensions in West Asia and a global shortage of interceptors.

The proposed sales are aimed at replenishing and strengthening the missile stockpiles of the four Gulf countries at a time when Patriot interceptors are in high demand because of conflicts in the Middle East and Europe.

According to sources cited by Reuters, the United States is also holding discussions on allowing Ukraine to manufacture some Patriot interceptor components, despite President Donald Trump previously saying that he had not approved such an arrangement.

Gulf States Seek More Missiles

The planned sale comes as Gulf countries seek to reinforce their air-defence capabilities amid heightened regional tensions. Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE are among the countries that rely on US-made Patriot systems to defend against ballistic missiles, aircraft and other aerial threats.

The demand for interceptors has increased significantly this year, putting additional pressure on global supplies.

The United States has also been trying to expand production capacity. Last month, the US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth up to $58.6 billion for the production of Patriot interceptor missiles.

The Patriot system, first used operationally during the 1991 Gulf War, has since become one of the most widely deployed advanced air-defence platforms in the world.

Ukraine Adds to Global Demand

Ukraine remains one of the biggest sources of demand for Patriot interceptors. Kyiv has been seeking additional missiles to defend against Russian ballistic missile attacks, which have intensified during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The conflict involving Iran has also placed pressure on US and Gulf inventories, while some European countries have been reluctant to release missiles from their own reserves because of concerns about maintaining adequate stocks for national defence.

The resulting supply constraints have made additional production and international procurement increasingly important for countries operating the Patriot system.

How Patriot Interceptors Work

The Patriot system can use different types of interceptors depending on the threat being addressed.

The earlier PAC-2 interceptor uses a blast-fragmentation warhead designed to destroy or disable a target through an explosive blast and fragments.

The PAC-3 family uses a different approach known as hit-to-kill technology, in which the interceptor directly collides with an incoming target to destroy it.

The system is capable of engaging a range of threats, including short-range ballistic missiles, aircraft and cruise missiles.

New PAC-3 ACE Interceptor

Lockheed Martin introduced the PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement Adapted Capability Effector (PAC-3 MSE ACE) in July, describing it as a lower-cost interceptor designed to maintain significant defensive capabilities.

The company has said the new interceptor could cost roughly half as much as existing alternatives while retaining the ability to engage short-range ballistic missiles, aircraft and cruise missiles.

The Patriot system's radar is also designed to track multiple potential threats simultaneously. NATO has previously stated that the system's radar can have a range of more than 150 kilometres and track up to 100 potential targets.

Patriot Comes at High Cost

Patriot air-defence systems are among the most expensive conventional defence platforms.

According to estimates cited by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a newly produced Patriot battery can cost more than $1 billion, including approximately $400 million for the system itself and around $690 million for its missiles.

Individual PAC-3 interceptors are estimated to cost approximately $4 million to $5 million each, making large-scale stockpile replenishment a major financial commitment.

The latest US approval therefore highlights not only the growing demand for advanced air defence in West Asia but also the increasing pressure on global Patriot missile supplies as conflicts in multiple regions continue to drive procurement.

Deadly Overnight Attack

At least 14 people were killed and 27 others injured after Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, overnight, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday. The barrage, involving ballistic missiles and drones, caused widespread destruction across the capital and surrounding areas, intensifying Ukraine's appeal for stronger air defence capabilities.

The attack damaged warehouses, sparked multiple fires and triggered an ammonia leak, while emergency teams continued searching for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

Rescue Operations Underway

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one person was killed inside the city limits, while 24 others were injured, including an ambulance driver. Four victims remain in critical condition.

"There may still be people under the rubble," Klitschko said after rescue workers pulled two survivors from the remains of a warehouse near central Kyiv.

Ukraine's emergency services later confirmed that the death toll across the wider Kyiv region had risen to 14, with rescue operations continuing at multiple locations.

Officials reported that seven sites across the capital suffered damage. Fires broke out in warehouses and storage facilities, while debris from intercepted missiles landed near residential buildings. Emergency responders also worked to contain an ammonia leak caused by the strikes.

Massive Missile and Drone Barrage

According to Ukraine's Air Force, Russia launched four Zircon hypersonic missiles, 24 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 115 drones during the overnight assault.

Ukrainian air defence systems intercepted or electronically suppressed 98 drones, but officials acknowledged they were unable to stop the incoming ballistic missiles.

Russia's Defence Ministry said the strikes targeted logistics hubs and supply facilities allegedly supporting Ukraine's military operations. Independent verification of those claims was not immediately possible.

Ukraine Seeks Stronger Air Defence

The latest attack has renewed Kyiv's calls for additional long-range missile defence systems capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.

Ukraine continues to seek more PAC-3 Patriot interceptor missiles from the United States, currently regarded as one of the most effective systems against ballistic missile attacks. Discussions are also underway regarding the possibility of domestic production of Patriot missiles, although uncertainty remains over future US support.

With Patriot missile inventories under increasing global pressure, Ukrainian officials are also accelerating efforts to diversify their air defence partnerships.

European Missile Shield Project

Ukraine is increasingly turning to European defence manufacturers to strengthen its long-term air defence capabilities.

Ukrainian defence company Fire Point has begun integrating advanced radar and guidance technologies from more than a dozen European defence firms into the new Freyja missile defence system.

The programme, launched in Paris last month with backing from 10 European governments and 12 defence companies, including Eurosam, Leonardo, Thales and Saab, aims to develop a European-backed missile shield capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.

Officials believe the initiative could reduce Ukraine's dependence on US-made systems while providing a sustainable long-term solution as Russian missile attacks become more frequent.

Conflict Enters New Phase

The latest assault underscores the evolving nature of the war, with Russia increasingly relying on ballistic missiles alongside drone attacks to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences.

As Kyiv strengthens cooperation with European partners and continues seeking additional military assistance, the attack highlights the growing urgency of expanding missile defence capabilities to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to the United States and European allies to urgently supply additional Patriot air defence interceptor missiles, saying the systems should be protecting civilians instead of remaining in storage.

The appeal came after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone assault on multiple Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, leaving at least nine people dead and around 40 injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ukraine Running Short of Patriot Missiles

In a post on X, Zelenskyy said Russia launched 35 missiles, including 27 ballistic missiles, along with 185–190 dronesduring the overnight attack.

He claimed Ukraine was able to intercept only one ballistic missile, attributing the limited defence to the near depletion of the country's Patriot interceptor missile stockpile.

"America and Europe know what we need. Now only a political decision needs to be made. Anti-ballistic missiles should protect people, not lie in warehouses," Zelenskyy said.

Calls for Tougher Sanctions on Russia

The Ukrainian President also urged Western allies to impose additional sanctions on individuals and companies linked to Russia's missile production, defence industry and military supply chain.

He called for stricter measures targeting Russia's oil refining and fuel sectors, arguing that limiting those industries would reduce Moscow's capacity to sustain its military operations.

Zelenskyy further claimed that Russia has increasingly begun deploying jet-powered Shahed drones while adapting its battlefield strategy.

Russia Says Military Targets Were Hit

Russia's Defence Ministry said the overnight strikes targeted Ukraine's military-industrial facilities and logistics centres in Kyiv.

Ukrainian officials, however, maintained that residential areas and civilian infrastructure were also struck during the attacks.

Defence Talks With US Underway

Zelenskyy said he held discussions with Defence Minister Rustem Umerov and senior officials ahead of upcoming diplomatic engagements with the United States.

He expressed hope that Ukraine would receive concrete commitments for additional air defence systems and military assistance in the coming days.

The live demonstration showcased the system's advanced detection, tracking, command-and-control, and engagement capabilities, highlighting India's growing expertise in indigenous air defence technology.

The demonstration was conducted in the presence of Indian Army officials and featured the system in its complete operational configuration. The event underscored India's ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing under the country's self-reliance initiative.

Advanced Multi-Layer Air Defence System

Bhargavastra is a vehicle-mounted, multi-layered counter-swarm drone system developed specifically to counter the increasing threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and coordinated drone swarms.

The demonstration included a Command and Control Vehicle (CCV) equipped with radar, drone detection systems, and an advanced C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence) architecture. A separate launcher vehicle carrying multiple launch tubes was also deployed as part of the system.

During the trial, SDAL launched a swarm of drones that were successfully detected by the radar and sensor network. The integrated C4I system generated a real-time drone attack alert, displayed the complete operational picture, and assigned targets to the launcher vehicle. The complete engagement sequence was demonstrated successfully, although live rocket firing was not conducted due to safety restrictions within the plant premises.

Designed for India's Diverse Terrain

According to the company, Bhargavastra has been engineered to operate effectively across India's varied geographical conditions, including deserts, plains, and mountainous regions at altitudes of up to 5,000 metres above mean sea level.

Its surveillance suite combines multiple technologies, including:

• Radar capable of detecting UAVs up to 10 kilometres
• Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) surveillance system
• Passive Radio Frequency (RF) sensors

These systems work together to detect, classify, and track aerial threats, allowing operators to engage either individual drones or coordinated drone swarms with high accuracy.

Hard-Kill Solution Against Autonomous Drones

Unlike conventional anti-drone systems that rely primarily on electronic jamming or signal spoofing, Bhargavastra offers a hard-kill capability capable of physically destroying hostile drones.

The weapon system employs indigenously developed unguided rockets and precision micro-missiles arranged in a multi-layer engagement architecture. This approach enables the system to neutralize autonomous drones that are resistant to electronic countermeasures while significantly reducing interception costs.

The company believes the system offers a more economical alternative to expensive surface-to-air missiles, which are often used against relatively low-cost drones.

Addressing Emerging Battlefield Challenges

Recent conflicts around the world—including those involving Russia and Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the ongoing tensions in West Asia—have demonstrated the growing use of drones in modern warfare.

Industry estimates suggest that more than 100,000 drones are now deployed annually in active combat operations worldwide. The increasing reliance on unmanned aerial systems has created an urgent need for affordable and scalable counter-drone technologies.

He described Bhargavastra as one of the world's first fully integrated, vehicle-mounted, multi-layer counter-swarm drone systems employing unguided rockets and micro-missiles specifically designed for swarm neutralization.

Indian Army officials who attended the demonstration appreciated the technological achievement and expressed satisfaction with the system's capabilities.

The successful demonstration is expected to strengthen India's indigenous defence ecosystem and represents another significant step toward achieving self-reliance in advanced air defence technologies.
