Why this catches some candidates off guard
A visible downward trend across Class 10 → Class 12 → graduation marks can meaningfully hurt shortlisting chances even with a strong CAT percentile, since several IIMs specifically reward consistency across all three stages rather than just raw graduation marks alone. In practical terms, a candidate with a 99 percentile in CAT but a mediocre graduation score can lose a shortlist call to someone with a slightly lower percentile but stronger, more consistent academics — depending entirely on which IIM's specific formula is being applied.

Where a strong CAT score can still compensate
Newer IIMs and so-called "Baby IIMs" (those established after 2015) tend to place comparatively less weight on academic profile and more on the CAT score itself, meaning a high percentile can go further at these institutes even with an average academic record. Profile-focused IIMs like Bangalore, Calcutta and Kozhikode remain less forgiving in this respect.

Since Class 10, 12 and graduation marks are already fixed and can't be changed at this stage, the practical takeaway is to understand exactly how much weight your target IIMs place on academics versus CAT score, and calibrate your target percentile accordingly — a candidate with a weaker academic profile targeting a heavily CAT-weighted IIM like Ahmedabad or Lucknow may have a more realistic shot than the same candidate targeting a profile-heavy institute like Bangalore or Calcutta.
