Indian-American entrepreneur and former Coinbase Chief Technology Officer Balaji Srinivasan has explained why he left the United States and became a Singaporean citizen, saying the city-state offers a more welcoming environment for innovation, entrepreneurship and multiculturalism than the US.

In a detailed post titled "Why did WSJ Stu Woo follow me to Singapore", Srinivasan said his decision was influenced by both professional opportunities and personal experiences, including what he described as racial discrimination while growing up in America.

Says Innovation Is Shifting Towards Asia

Srinivasan argued that the global centre of technological innovation is gradually moving beyond traditional hubs such as Silicon Valley.

According to him, countries like Singapore and India are becoming increasingly attractive destinations for entrepreneurs because of their business-friendly policies, efficient governance and openness to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and biotechnology.

He said entrepreneurs no longer need to relocate to the United States to build globally successful technology companies.

Criticises US Technology Environment

The former Coinbase executive also expressed concern over what he described as growing bureaucratic hurdles and declining support for technological innovation in the United States.

He argued that increasing political polarisation and regulatory challenges have made it more difficult for entrepreneurs to pursue ambitious projects, reducing America's long-standing competitive advantage in the technology sector.

According to Srinivasan, Singapore provides a more stable environment where innovation and entrepreneurship receive stronger institutional support.

Personal Experiences Influenced Decision

Beyond business considerations, Srinivasan said his move was shaped by personal experiences as an Indian-origin immigrant.

Recalling his childhood in the US, he said he was often bullied for being the "lone brown kid" at school. He argued that minorities frequently face challenges in gaining acceptance and defending their place in society.

Referring to Singapore's multicultural society, Srinivasan highlighted that Tamil is one of the country's official languages and noted the presence of Hindu temples and a large Indian-origin community.

He said these factors made him feel more accepted and culturally connected than he had experienced in the United States.

"I Voted With My Feet"

Srinivasan described his relocation as a personal decision rather than a rejection of America.

"I voted with my feet," he said, explaining that he chose to live in a country whose values he believes align more closely with meritocracy, stability and technological progress.

He also claimed that political divisions in the US, ranging from anti-immigrant rhetoric to hostility toward parts of the technology industry, have encouraged many skilled professionals to explore opportunities elsewhere.

Network State Vision

The entrepreneur linked his relocation to his broader "Network State" philosophy, which advocates building communities centred on shared values, technology and entrepreneurship.

Singapore, he said, provides an ideal base for experimenting with new models of education, innovation and digital governance.

Growing Appeal of Singapore

Srinivasan's remarks come amid a broader trend of technology entrepreneurs increasingly considering Asia as a destination for startups and investment.

While the United States remains home to many of the world's largest technology firms, Singapore has strengthened its position as a global hub for finance, artificial intelligence, blockchain and advanced technology, attracting founders and investors seeking a predictable regulatory and business environment.
