FSSAI Bans Select United Spirits and Inbrew Whisky, Rum Products Over Flavour Additives

FSSAI has prohibited the sale of select whisky and rum products made by United Spirits and Inbrew Beverages, citing misleading flavour additives and directing revised consumer disclosures.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has prohibited the sale of select whisky and rum products manufactured by United Spirits and Inbrew Beverages, citing the use of flavour additives that could mislead consumers about the nature and quality of the alcoholic beverages.

The action reflects the food regulator's increased scrutiny of manufacturing practices and labelling standards in India's alcoholic beverage industry.

Products Covered by the Ban

According to the FSSAI, the affected products include:

Antiquity Blue Whisky

Royal Challenge Whisky

manufactured by United Spirits in Madhya Pradesh.

The regulator has also prohibited the sale of:

Bagpiper Deluxe Whisky

Old Cask Deluxe XXX Rum

manufactured by Inbrew Beverages in the state.

Regulator Raises Consumer Protection Concerns

The FSSAI said inspections and testing found that some manufacturers were using external flavouring substances to recreate the characteristic aroma and taste associated with whisky and rum rather than allowing these qualities to develop naturally through raw materials and the maturation process.

According to the regulator, such practices could create a misleading impression regarding the quality and authenticity of the products, potentially influencing consumer purchasing decisions.

Existing Stock Gets Limited Relief

The regulator said two manufacturers that challenged the prohibition orders have been granted limited relief.

They have been permitted to sell existing stock subject to revised front-of-pack disclosures designed to provide consumers with clearer product information.

However, the FSSAI has not disclosed the specific labelling changes required under the revised conditions.

Increased Regulatory Oversight

United Spirits, India's largest spirits manufacturer and the Indian subsidiary of global liquor company Diageo, markets several premium alcoholic beverage brands across the country.

Inbrew Beverages is also among India's leading liquor manufacturers, with a portfolio that includes whisky, rum, beer and other alcoholic products.

The latest action highlights the FSSAI's continued focus on ensuring compliance with food safety regulations, transparent labelling and fair marketing practices across the food and beverage sector, including alcoholic drinks.

The regulator's move is expected to encourage stricter adherence to manufacturing standards while reinforcing consumer awareness through improved product disclosures.
