Commonwealth Games 2026: India Finishes Fourth With 39 Medals, Boxing Tops Medal Chart

India concluded its campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 with an impressive haul of 39 medals, finishing fourth in the overall medals table. The Indian contingent secured 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze medals, with boxing emerging as the country's most successful discipline.

Although India's overall medal tally was lower than the 61 medals won at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the performance came in a significantly smaller edition of the Games. Glasgow hosted competitions in only 10 sports, compared to 19 sports in Birmingham, where disciplines such as badminton, wrestling, shooting, hockey, table tennis and cricket collectively contributed 30 medals to India's tally.

Boxing Leads India's Medal Rush

Indian boxers delivered the country's strongest performance, accounting for 10 medals, including 7 gold and 3 silver. The discipline alone contributed more than one-fourth of India's total medal count.

Among the gold medallists were Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghangas, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal, while Lovlina Borgohain, Jadumani Singh and Narendra Berwalclaimed silver medals.

Athletics Delivers Medals But No Gold

Athletics produced 10 medals, making it India's joint-highest medal-winning sport alongside boxing in terms of total podium finishes. However, the discipline failed to deliver a single gold medal.

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra settled for silver, while Yashvir Singh claimed bronze in his Commonwealth Games debut. Gulveer Singh won silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m, while Tejaswin Shankar secured India's first-ever Commonwealth medal in the decathlon. Despite the strong overall tally, India's sprint and relay teams could not finish on the podium.

Smaller Contingent, Better Success Rate

India fielded a contingent of 123 athletes, considerably smaller than the 210-member team that competed in Birmingham four years ago.

Out of the 123 athletes, 38 returned with medals, resulting in a 31% medal conversion rate, slightly better than the 29% success rate achieved at the 2022 Games.

Before the tournament, internal assessments by the Indian Olympic Association and national sports federations had projected around 31 medals, including six golds. The final tally exceeded expectations, with India winning 13 gold medals and comfortably surpassing the predicted medal count.

Strong Performances Across Disciplines

Apart from boxing and athletics, weightlifting contributed eight medals, para athletics added six, judo produced four, while para powerlifting delivered one medal.

Indian judokas created history by winning the country's first Commonwealth Games gold medals in judo, with Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh finishing on top of the podium. Para athletics also impressed, collecting three gold, two silver and one bronze medal from an 11-member squad.

Areas That Need Improvement

Despite finishing in the top four, several disciplines fell short of expectations.

Weightlifting yielded only one gold medal, despite winning eight overall medals. Lawn bowls, which had produced medals in Birmingham, failed to reach the podium this time. India's para powerlifting team managed just one medal despite high expectations, while gymnastics, swimming and cycling ended their campaigns without a podium finish.

Top Four Finish Maintained

India retained its fourth position in the Commonwealth Games medal standings behind Australia, England and Canada. Given the reduced number of sports and a much smaller contingent, the overall performance is being viewed as a positive outcome that highlights India's growing strength in selected disciplines, particularly boxing and para sports.
