The grand procession, held during the holy month of Shravan, began from the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple and covered its traditional eight-kilometre route to the banks of the Kshipra River before returning to the temple premises.

Vedic Theme Marks First Procession

This year's opening procession was organised around the theme of "Vedic Udgosh" (Vedic Chanting), marking the first time such a concept was adopted for the ceremonial event.

Lord Mahakaleshwar, in the Manmahesh form, was placed in the traditional silver palanquin and taken through the city's historic streets amid devotional chants, Vedic hymns and the participation of thousands of devotees.

The spiritual atmosphere was enhanced by the continuous recitation of sacred mantras and religious performances along the route.

Lakhs Line Route for Darshan

According to temple authorities, approximately 6.13 lakh devotees had darshan of Baba Mahakal during the procession.

Pilgrims from Madhya Pradesh and several other states assembled along the entire route from early afternoon to catch a glimpse of the deity as the procession passed through major city roads before reaching the Kshipra riverfront.

The Shravan Sawari is considered one of the most important annual traditions at the Mahakaleshwar Temple and attracts massive crowds every year.

Special Worship at Kshipra River

After reaching the Kshipra river, a special religious ceremony was organised as part of the traditional rituals.

Around 1,100 Batuk Brahmins collectively performed Vedic prayers and chanted sacred mantras in honour of Lord Mahakaleshwar before the procession began its return journey to the temple.

The rituals formed an important part of the centuries-old tradition observed during the Shravan month.

Second Procession on August 10

Temple authorities have announced that the second Shravan procession will be taken out on August 10.

The upcoming Sawari will feature the theme of traditional folk dances, showcasing the cultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh alongside the religious celebrations.

As per the schedule, the ceremonial worship will begin at 4 pm, after which the procession will depart from the Mahakaleshwar Temple, follow its customary route and reach the Kshipra river around 5 pm before returning to the shrine.

The remaining Shravan processions are also expected to draw lakhs of devotees to Ujjain over the coming weeks.
