Mumbai: The future of Ajit Agarkar as India's chief selector has reportedly become uncertain, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said to be evaluating its options ahead of the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM). According to a report by Dainik Jagran, the recent controversy surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement rumours has complicated Agarkar’s position, prompting fresh discussions within the board about the leadership of the national selection committee. Former India batter VVS Laxman, who currently heads the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), has reportedly emerged as a strong candidate for the role if the board decides to make a change.

Agarkar, who took charge as India's chief selector in July 2023, was initially expected to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup. His original tenure ended in June this year, but the BCCI granted him a three-month extension, which expires next month. Until recently, an extension appeared to be a formality, particularly after India enjoyed remarkable success in ICC events during his tenure. However, recent developments have reportedly led the board to reassess the situation before taking a final decision.

According to the report, the episode involving Rohit Sharma's alleged retirement plans played a major role in changing the board's thinking. Speculation over Rohit's future had created widespread discussion before the senior batter silenced all doubts by scoring a century in the very next ODI against England. The conflicting narratives surrounding the incident reportedly did not go down well within sections of the BCCI, leading to questions about communication and selection management. While the board has not officially commented on the matter, the report claims that the incident has made Agarkar's continuation less certain than it appeared a few weeks ago.

Former India captain VVS Laxman is now reportedly being considered as a possible successor. Sources quoted in the report suggest that the discussions remain at a preliminary stage, with no final decision taken yet. The issue is expected to be formally discussed during the BCCI Annual General Meeting in September, where senior officials are likely to review the future of the national selection panel. The report further claims that several BCCI officials believe Laxman's experience and stature within Indian cricket would enable him to command greater influence in the dressing room and maintain stronger communication with senior players.

Laxman has been associated with several important roles in Indian cricket over the past few years. As the head of the Centre of Excellence, he oversees India's talent development pathway, including Under-19 programmes, coaching structures, sports science, and player education initiatives. He has also served as India's stand-in head coach during multiple overseas assignments whenever the senior coaching staff was unavailable. His extensive involvement with young cricketers and domestic talent has strengthened his reputation as one of the most respected figures in Indian cricket administration.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Agarkar's record as chief selector remains highly impressive. Since assuming office, India have reached four ICC white-ball finals and lifted three consecutive global trophies, including the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy, and 2026 T20 World Cup. These achievements have been viewed as one of the strongest phases for Indian limited-overs cricket. However, recent selection decisions have drawn criticism from sections of former players and experts, leading to increased scrutiny over the selection committee's functioning.

The report also states that Agarkar's immediate future could depend on the outcome of India's upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Although selection committees are generally evaluated over longer periods, the board is reportedly assessing the overall direction of the team before making a long-term decision.
