Yogi Adityanath to Visit Ram Mandir Amid Donation Controversy; SIT Probe Intensifies

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's Ayodhya visit comes as investigators continue probing alleged irregularities in Ram Mandir donations, with administrative developments adding to the ongoing scrutiny.

As the investigation into alleged irregularities involving Ram Mandir donations gathers momentum, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is scheduled to visit Ayodhya on Friday. The visit comes against the backdrop of a high-profile probe into claims of theft and mismanagement of offerings at the temple, a matter that has triggered political debate and intensified administrative scrutiny.

According to sources, the Chief Minister will offer prayers at the Ram Mandir during his visit. However, a specific point in the administrative protocol issued for the programme has drawn attention. Sources familiar with the arrangements said Ram Mandir Trust General Secretary Champat Rai has been asked to nominate another representative in his place for the event. The details of the nominated individual are reportedly required to be submitted to the designated duty magistrate before the visit.

The development comes as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its inquiry into allegations surrounding the handling of temple donations. On Thursday, investigators visited the Ram Mandir premises for the fourth consecutive day as part of the ongoing probe. Sources indicated that temple trustee Dr. Anil Mishra may be questioned regarding certain procedural and financial aspects linked to donation management.

SIT Investigation Expands

Investigators are reportedly examining the process used for counting donations as well as the appointment of personnel associated with the handling of temple funds. Sources suggest that several individuals connected to the counting process have already come under scrutiny.

According to information emerging from the investigation, five individuals allegedly linked to the case have been identified. Authorities have reportedly recovered approximately ₹2 crore based on information provided during the inquiry. All five individuals were associated with the donation-counting process at the temple, sources said.

Officials have not yet publicly disclosed the full findings of the investigation, and the probe remains ongoing.

Administrative Reforms Under Discussion

Amid the controversy, discussions are reportedly underway regarding the introduction of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO)-style administrative framework for the Ram Mandir, similar to the management structure followed at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

Sources said the proposal is aimed at strengthening transparency in financial management, donation accounting, and overall administrative operations. Government officials and representatives of the temple trust are believed to be holding consultations before any final decision is made.

The possibility of structural reforms has gained attention as authorities seek to address concerns raised during the investigation and improve oversight mechanisms.

Political Reactions Intensify

The controversy has also triggered strong political reactions. Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai visited Ayodhya and criticized the BJP over the allegations, demanding strict action and an independent investigation into the matter.

The issue first surfaced on June 7 when former Samajwadi Party minister Pawan Pandey alleged that between ₹5 crore and ₹7.5 crore in temple offerings had gone missing. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav later questioned the government's response and called for a thorough examination of the allegations.

Champat Rai had previously rejected the claims, maintaining that no evidence supporting the allegations had emerged.

Demand for Wider Probe

As the controversy expanded, BJP leader Dr. Rajneesh Singh reportedly wrote to the Prime Minister seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry. Sources indicated that the Prime Minister's Office subsequently sought a report from the Ram Mandir Trust regarding the allegations.

With the SIT investigation continuing and administrative reforms under consideration, the developments surrounding the Ram Mandir donation controversy are expected to remain under close public and political scrutiny in the coming days.

Japan Halts Indian Mango Imports After 20 Years

Exporters face double blow as West Asia crisis disrupts shipping routes and container availability

For the first time in two decades, Japan has stopped importing mangoes from India after inspection teams found serious irregularities at vapour heat treatment facilities in Uttar Pradesh. The suspension, which took effect in late March, has left exporters scrambling just as the peak season was getting underway.

Japanese authorities flagged operational deficiencies at a treatment plant in Rehmanpur during inspections conducted earlier this year. The Yokohama Plant Protection Association subsequently issued a notice stating that mango shipments carrying Indian inspection certificates issued after March 25 would no longer be accepted at Japanese ports.

What inspectors found

The Japanese team reportedly identified shortcomings in fumigation procedures, disinfection systems, and overall pest-control measures at the facility. Vapour heat treatment, a non-chemical process that uses hot and humid air to eliminate fruit flies and other pests, is a mandatory requirement for mangoes bound for Japan.

Sources familiar with the matter said documentation standards and compliance records also raised concerns among the inspection team.

Premium varieties now off Japanese shelves

The ban means several premium Indian mango varieties will not reach Japanese consumers this season. These include Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, Banganapalli, Chausa, and Malika — mangoes grown across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal that had built a steady following in Japan over the past two decades.

Japan had previously banned Indian mangoes in 1986 over fruit fly concerns, a restriction that remained in place until 2006. The market reopened only after India conducted scientific studies and strengthened its pest-control systems to meet Japanese phytosanitary standards.

Exporters already bleeding from West Asia crisis

The timing has proved particularly painful for traders. Indian mango exporters are already struggling with disrupted shipping routes and rising freight costs triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Refrigerated containers, essential for transporting perishable mangoes, have become scarce and expensive. Industry representatives estimate that overall mango exports have already fallen by 20 to 30 per cent this season.

One exporter told media outlets that while Japan is not India's largest market, losing access this year feels especially harsh because domestic demand has also weakened.

Climate adds to farmers' misery

The trouble does not end at the port. Mango growers in Maharashtra's Alphonso-growing belt have suffered severe crop losses due to extreme heat and abnormal weather patterns linked to El Niño. Government-backed surveys in some regions estimate crop damage at 85 to 90 per cent.

Farmers are now dealing with reduced harvests and restricted export access simultaneously, squeezing incomes from both ends.

What happens next

Exporters and industry bodies say discussions with Japanese authorities are already underway. India may need to tighten monitoring of VHT facilities, upgrade inspection systems, and improve documentation practices to regain Japan's trust.

But many traders fear this year's export season — which runs primarily from April to June — may already be lost. For now, Japanese shelves will remain empty of Indian mangoes, and exporters are staring at one of their toughest seasons in recent memory.

Yogi Adityanath Warns Against Namaz on Roads Ahead of Bakrid

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday issued a firm warning against offering namaz on roads, asserting that the state government would not permit any disruption to public movement as Bakrid approaches. Speaking at a media house event in the state capital, the Chief Minister made it clear that while prayers would not be stopped, they must remain confined to designated spaces.

Strict Stance on Public Spaces

Yogi Adityanath emphasised that roads are meant for traffic and common citizens, not for religious gatherings. “Namaz will not be allowed on roads. If people agree peacefully, fine; otherwise, stricter measures will be taken,” he said. He added that prayers should be offered at mosques, Eidgahs, or other designated places, and larger congregations could be managed in shifts if necessary.

The remarks come nearly a week before Bakrid, when large numbers typically gather for Eid prayers. Officials have been directed to ensure compliance with existing orders that ban namaz on thoroughfares.

Law Applies Equally to All

The Chief Minister stressed that the law remains the same for everyone in Uttar Pradesh. “People ask me whether namaz happens on roads in UP? I say, absolutely not. Roads are for common people to walk on. No one has the right to come and disturb traffic,” he stated.

He referred to a previous incident in Bareilly in September 2025, where tensions arose over a protest following namaz, leading to stone-pelting and subsequent police action. “People tried their hand in Bareilly, and they also saw the strength of the government,” Yogi Adityanath noted, underscoring that no one would be allowed to block roads or create disorder.

2022-23 Ban on Roadside Namaz

The Yogi government had already imposed a complete ban on offering namaz on roads in 2022-2023. Instructions were issued to restrict religious events, including those on Eid and Alvida Jumma, to proper religious venues. Local administrations have since been enforcing these guidelines to prevent traffic snarls and maintain public order.

Highlighting State’s Transformation

While addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister also spoke about the broader changes in Uttar Pradesh. He recalled how the state was once associated with violence and instability but is now manufacturing BrahMos missiles. “If the atmosphere is negative, ‘One District-One Mafia’ emerges. If it is positive, ‘One District-One Product’ is created,” he observed.

Yogi Adityanath pointed to rising investments, increasing employment, and the state’s progress towards becoming a one trillion-dollar economy. He also highlighted improvements in women’s safety, noting that women now work night shifts and return home without fear. “No one can harass daughters now,” he said. The state has remained revenue surplus for six years and is no longer considered a BIMARU state, he added.

Balanced Development Across Districts

The government, according to the Chief Minister, is focusing on equitable growth across all 75 districts, leveraging agriculture, infrastructure, and the power of the youth. He reiterated that Uttar Pradesh no longer needs to depend on external support and has immense internal potential.

During recent election campaigns in West Bengal, Yogi Adityanath had criticised alleged appeasement politics there, contrasting it with the situation in Uttar Pradesh where roads are kept clear for traffic and festivals proceed peacefully without curfews or riots.

Public Order Before Festival

As preparations for Bakrid gain pace, the administration is expected to step up vigil to ensure prayers do not spill onto roads. Local police and district officials have been asked to coordinate with community leaders for smooth conduct of religious events within permitted limits.

Authorities say the focus remains on maintaining law and order while respecting religious sentiments. The message from the top appears clear: religious freedom is protected, but public spaces cannot be allowed to turn into arenas of chaos.

The Chief Minister’s remarks are likely to set the tone for administrative preparedness in the coming days across the state.

A violent thunderstorm accompanied by winds gusting up to 80 kmph swept through 30 districts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, killing at least 94 people. Prayagraj reported the highest number of fatalities at 17, followed by Bhadohi with 16 deaths. Officials confirmed the storm also uprooted hundreds of trees and brought down electricity poles, disrupting road and power networks across large swathes of the state.

Death toll mounts in UP

Among the most distressing reports came from Bareilly, where a young man was swept away along with a tin shed as the wind gained sudden intensity. In Banda, the mercury touched 45.4°C even as the storm lashed other parts. According to state disaster management officials, most deaths were caused by wall collapses, falling trees and flying debris. An alert for strong winds and rain has been issued for 51 districts on Thursday as well.

Heatwave scorches Rajasthan

While UP battled the storm, Rajasthan remained locked in a severe heatwave spell. For the fourth consecutive day, Jaisalmer recorded the country’s highest temperature at 46.1°C on Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Thursday in Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Barmer, warning of extreme heat. Heatwave conditions are also expected in 13 other districts across the state.

Madhya Pradesh on orange alert

More than 25 districts in Madhya Pradesh are reeling under heatwave conditions, which the IMD predicts will continue until May 18. Khajuraho logged 45.4°C on Wednesday. An orange alert for heatwave and “warm nights” – when night temperatures remain unusually high – has been sounded for Indore, Ujjain, Dhar and Ratlam. Local authorities have advised residents, especially the elderly and children, to avoid stepping out between noon and 4 pm.

Haryana sees rising mercury, yellow alert

In Haryana, maximum temperatures rose by 1.1°C over the past 24 hours, with five cities crossing the 40°C mark. Narnaul was the hottest at 42.5°C. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in the state starting May 17. Meanwhile, Bihar is bracing for a different kind of weather: seven districts including Purnia and Katihar are under an orange alert for heavy rain on Thursday.

Forecast for next two days

The weather department expects heatwave conditions to persist on May 15 over parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Dust storms with winds of 50-60 kmph are likely in Jharkhand. On May 16, rain and strong winds may affect Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and western UP. Hailstorms are possible in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand, along with lightning alerts for Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and the northeastern states.

Ground reports from Gonda and Unnao showed uprooted neem trees crushing parked cars, while in Mumbai, children were spotted carrying umbrellas even under the harsh sun – a small reminder of how uneven this pre-monsoon season has been. With the red alert still in place, officials have urged people in affected zones to stay indoors and keep emergency helplines handy.

Four from Chhattisgarh held for using AI to forge tickets during LSG-RCB clash

In a swift operation, Lucknow Police arrested four members of an interstate gang accused of printing and selling counterfeit IPL tickets outside the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Thursday evening. The arrests came hours after a fan was caught with a forged ticket during the Lucknow Super Giants versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru match.

The gang allegedly relied on artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, along with graphic design software to create near-identical duplicates of official IPL tickets. Police said the operation targeted unsuspecting cricket enthusiasts who had travelled to Lucknow for the high-stakes IPL 2026 encounter.

How the racket was exposed

According to officials, the case surfaced when security personnel detected a suspicious ticket during routine checks at the stadium gates. Initial questioning of the ticket holder pointed to sellers operating just outside the venue.

DCP (Lucknow South) Amit Kumar Anand told PTI that a joint team from the Cyber Cell and Sushant Golf City police station quickly swung into action. “During questioning, it was revealed that someone outside the stadium had sold the ticket,” he said. The four accused, all residents of Durg district in Chhattisgarh, were nabbed in a late-evening operation.

Police are now examining whether the gang had been active during earlier IPL matches in the city. Recovered items reportedly included fake tickets, printing materials, mobile phones, a laptop, and a vehicle used for their operations.

Tech-savvy gang from Chhattisgarh

Investigators described the arrested individuals as having educational and technical backgrounds that helped them replicate ticket layouts, barcodes, and security features with alarming accuracy. They allegedly sourced images of genuine tickets from social media and refined designs using tools like CorelDRAW, while consulting AI for details on paper quality and dimensions.

The accused had reportedly travelled specifically to Lucknow to capitalise on the demand for tickets during the LSG home games. Their activities have sparked fresh concerns about the growing misuse of generative AI in sports-related frauds across the country.

On-field excitement amid the scam

Despite the off-field controversy, the match itself provided plenty of drama. Lucknow Super Giants snapped a six-match losing streak with a nine-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. Rain interruptions reduced the contest to 19 overs per side.

Mitchell Marsh starred with a sensational century, while young pacer Prince Yadav impressed with the ball. The win kept LSG’s playoff hopes alive and gave home fans something to cheer about, even as the ticket scam news spread quickly through the stands and social media.

Rising worries over digital fraud in IPL

This is not the first instance of ticket fraud during the IPL season, but the use of AI tools has raised the alarm among authorities and fans alike. With thousands of supporters attending matches across multiple venues, verifying authenticity remains a challenge despite digital QR codes and official booking platforms.

Senior police officials indicated that cyber surveillance and coordination with IPL authorities and BCCI will be strengthened for remaining matches in Lucknow. Fans have been advised to purchase tickets only through verified channels and to report suspicious sellers immediately.

Local residents near the stadium expressed mixed reactions. While many welcomed the quick police action, some fans who missed the match or paid premium prices online voiced frustration over inadequate checks outside the venue.

What lies ahead

The arrested individuals are being questioned further, and police have not ruled out the possibility of more accomplices. Legal proceedings under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act are underway.

As the IPL 2026 season heads into its crucial phase, this incident serves as a reminder of the need for tighter technological safeguards and public awareness to protect the spirit of the game from modern-day fraudsters.

In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court restores attempt to rape charge in a controversial case from Uttar Pradesh, overturning a March 2025 order of the Allahabad High Court. The apex court ruled that acts such as groping a minor, breaking her pyjama string, and attempting to drag her to a secluded spot clearly fall within the ambit of attempt to rape.

The verdict, delivered by a bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant of the Supreme Court of India, comes after the top court took suo motu cognisance of the High Court’s observations, which had sparked widespread criticism across legal and civil society circles.

Background of the Kasganj Minor Assault Case

The case relates to a 2021 incident in Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh. According to the complaint filed by the victim’s mother in January 2022, three youths allegedly stopped her 14-year-old daughter on the pretext of dropping her home.

The accused reportedly:

Touched the minor’s private parts

Attempted to drag her under a culvert

Broke the string of her pyjama

Allegedly threatened bystanders with a country-made pistol

A case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act). The special POCSO court in Kasganj issued summons in 2023.

Allahabad High Court Verdict Triggered Controversy

On March 17, 2025, the Allahabad High Court held that the alleged acts did not amount to rape or attempt to rape. It dropped IPC Section 376 and Section 18 of the POCSO Act, directing that the accused be tried under lesser charges related to sexual harassment.

The Allahabad High Court verdict drew sharp criticism. Legal experts argued that such reasoning diluted the seriousness of sexual crimes against minors and risked setting a troubling precedent.

Supreme Court’s Strong Observations

The Supreme Court restores attempt to rape charge, stating unequivocally that physical acts demonstrating clear sexual intent and preparation can constitute attempt to rape.

Earlier, while staying the High Court’s order, the bench had observed that certain remarks reflected an “insensitive and inhuman approach.” The court also cautioned judicial authorities against using language that could intimidate victims or discourage them from pursuing justice.

During hearings in December 2025, the apex court emphasized that judicial reasoning must remain sensitive in cases involving minors, especially under the POCSO framework.

Why This Judgment Matters Now

At a time when crimes against women and minors remain a major concern, this ruling reinforces:

A stricter interpretation of sexual assault laws

Protection of minors under the POCSO Act

Judicial accountability in sensitive cases

Legal experts believe the judgment may guide future courts in interpreting what constitutes “attempt” in sexual offence cases. It also signals that higher courts will intervene if lower court rulings appear to undermine victim protection.

Practical Takeaways

For legal practitioners and observers:

Courts may adopt a broader interpretation of “attempt” in sexual crimes.

POCSO-related cases will likely see stricter judicial scrutiny.

Victim-sensitive language in judgments is now under sharper focus.

By overturning the High Court’s order, the Supreme Court restores attempt to rape charge and sends a strong message on safeguarding minors’ rights. The ruling not only corrects a controversial interpretation but also strengthens the legal framework protecting children under Indian law.

As debates around judicial sensitivity and women’s safety continue nationwide, this landmark decision is likely to shape future legal discourse and reinforce public trust in the justice system.

Shankaracharya Yogi Dispute Escalates: Avimukteshwaranand Demands Proof of Hindu Identity in 40 Days

In the ongoing Shankaracharya Yogi dispute, Swami Avimukteshwaranand challenges CM Yogi Adityanath to ban cow slaughter or shed his saffron robes, amid rising tensions over Hindu identity and cow protection.

In a bold escalation of the Shankaracharya Yogi dispute, Swami Avimukteshwaranand has given Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath 40 days to prove his Hindu identity by declaring cows as "Gaumata" and banning cow slaughter. Speaking at a Varanasi press conference on January 30, 2026, the Shankaracharya accused the CM of hypocrisy, stating, "The saffron robe is just for show if you can't protect cows." This comes amid ongoing friction from the Magh Mela incident, highlighting deep divisions in India's religious and political landscape.

The 40-Day Challenge

Avimukteshwaranand's ultimatum is clear: Stop beef exports from Uttar Pradesh, which he claims account for over 40% of India's total, or be labeled a "fake Hindu." He emphasized that true Hinduism involves cow service, not mere speeches or attire. "Prove your devotion to cows, or remove the saffron robes," he demanded. This Shankaracharya Yogi dispute underscores a broader call for accountability in religious leadership.

Simulating expert views, religious scholar Dr. Rajesh Mishra notes, "This challenge taps into ancient Hindu texts like the Vedas, where cow protection is sacred. It's a test of political will versus cultural ethos." For readers, this means watching for policy shifts—contact local representatives to advocate for cow protection laws if aligned with your beliefs.

Background of the Magh Mela Clash

The rift began on January 18, 2026, when police halted Avimukteshwaranand's palanquin at the Prayagraj Magh Mela, leading to protests and alleged mistreatment of disciples. The administration demanded proof of his Shankaracharya status, which he provided, but he countered by questioning Yogi's Hindu credentials.

Tensions peaked with Yogi's indirect "Kalanemi" reference, prompting Avimukteshwaranand to compare the CM to historical tyrants like Aurangzeb. The saint community split, with three Shankaracharyas backing Avimukteshwaranand. He staged an 11-day protest, refusing the holy dip, and left on January 28, citing deep hurt.

Recent resignations amplified the drama: Bareilly City Magistrate quit in support of the Shankaracharya on January 26, followed by Ayodhya Deputy Commissioner's resignation backing Yogi.

Latest Updates and Reactions

On January 30, Avimukteshwaranand announced a saints' gathering in Lucknow on March 10-11 to decide "true Hindus" from "fakes." He rejected administration inducements, demanding apologies for assaulted followers.

Political fallout includes UP Congress chief Ajay Rai condemning the government for insulting centuries-old traditions after meeting the Shankaracharya. In Raebareli, a VHP hoarding labeled him "Ravan," sparking Congress protests and a police case.

Avimukteshwaranand alleged government harassment of cow devotees, drawing parallels to 1966 incidents. "Voicing against cow slaughter is now a crime," he said.

Why This Matters Now

In today's polarized India, this Shankaracharya Yogi dispute reflects clashes between religious purity and governance. With elections looming, it could sway Sanatani voters. Cow protection, a hot-button issue, ties into cultural identity amid global beef trade debates.

Practical takeaways: Stay informed via reliable sources; engage in peaceful advocacy for causes like animal rights. As Mishra advises, "Dialogue, not division, preserves Sanatan values."

This episode reminds us that faith and politics intersect powerfully—demanding transparency from leaders. As the 40-day clock ticks, all eyes are on Yogi's response.

The sacred grounds of Prayagraj’s Magh Mela have become the stage for a escalating confrontation between religious tradition and administrative authority. The Magh Mela controversy has intensified dramatically, with the Mela administration issuing a second stern notice to Swami Avimukteshwaranand within 48 hours, warning of a potential permanent ban from the festival. This clash, centered on events during the auspicious Mauni Amavasya bath, has split the saint community, drawn political intervention, and raised pressing questions about protocol and respect in India’s spiritual heartland.

At the core of the Magh Mela controversy are starkly conflicting accounts of January 18. The administration alleges the seer broke a barrier on a reserve pontoon bridge and attempted to forcibly enter a densely crowded area with a carriage, "creating a serious risk of a stampede." Their notice demands to know why he should not be banned for life, threatening to withdraw his camp’s allotted land if a satisfactory reply is not given within 24 hours.

However, Swami Avimukteshwaranand’s camp has fired back with a detailed, three-page rebuttal. His media in-charge, Shailendra Yogiraj, calls the notice "vindictive" and backdated. The Swami’s response denies all allegations, stating he owns no horse-drawn carriage and was in a simple palanquin carried by devotees. He accuses certain officials of deliberately orchestrating disorder and then scapegoating him, asserting that CCTV footage would exonerate him. On the administration’s challenge to his Shankaracharya title, his reply advises officials to refrain from commentary on sub-judice matters.

The Magh Mela controversy has revealed deep fissures within the religious community. Prominent voices like Dwarka’s Shankaracharya Swami Sadanand Maharaj and Puri’s Shankaracharya Nishchalanand Saraswati have rallied behind Avimukteshwaranand, condemning administrative "arrogance." Conversely, Jagadguru Rambhadracharya has stated "no injustice was done" to the Swami, suggesting the fault lies with his insistence on using a palanquin.

Politically, the issue is gaining heat. Samajwadi Party leader Mata Prasad Pandey met the Swami, alleging a conspiracy and promising to raise the issue in the assembly. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has condemned the treatment of the seer. Meanwhile, the administration appears to be holding its ground, setting the stage for a potential legal and devotional standoff.

Why This Matters Now

This is more than a procedural dispute. It highlights the tense, often fragile balance between managing millions of devotees at mega-festivals and respecting centuries-old traditions of ascetic authority. With the festival ongoing and the next key bath—Basant Panchami—approaching, the Magh Mela controversy threatens to cast a shadow over the remaining rituals. Swami Avimukteshwaranand has declared he will not perform the Basant Snan until he completes his disputed Mauni Amavasya bath, ensuring the impasse continues.

The coming 24 hours are critical. Will the administration’s ultimatum force a resolution, or will it inflame sentiments further, potentially triggering the wider saint-led protests some have warned of? This Magh Mela controversy has evolved from a local incident into a national discourse on faith, order, and power.

In a dramatic incident today, an Indian Air Force (IAF) training aircraft crashed into a pond in a densely populated area of Prayagraj, just three kilometres from the ongoing Magh Mela. Both pilots ejected safely using parachutes, averting a potential major tragedy.

The microlight aircraft encountered a technical malfunction shortly after taking off from the Bamrauli Air Force Station around noon. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the aircraft wobble mid-air before it plunged into a water hyacinth-choked pond behind KP College.

Pilots’ Quick Thinking Prevents Disaster

Defence Wing PRO Wing Commander Debartho Dhar confirmed the IAF training aircraft crash, stating the pilots exhibited remarkable presence of mind. “The pilots managed to bring the aircraft down in an isolated, uninhabited area, preventing any loss of civilian life or property,” he said. Both pilots are reported safe. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the technical fault.

Rescue Operations Amid Challenging Conditions

The crash site, located perilously close to schools and residential colonies, sparked immediate concern. Local residents were first on the scene, helping to pull the pilots from the marshy pond after their parachute landing. Teams from the Army, Fire Brigade, NDRF, and SDRF have been deployed. However, dense water hyacinth coverage has hampered efforts to reach and recover the aircraft itself.

An eyewitness, Mohammad Shabir, described the moment: “A bright red light appeared, then parachutes opened. The aircraft fell into the pond.” A teacher from nearby KP College stated the crash happened “before our eyes,” causing alarm among students and parents, many of whom rushed to collect their children.

Why This Incident Matters Now

The timing and location of this IAF training aircraft crash amplify its significance. It occurred in the heart of Prayagraj during the sacred Magh Mela, a period when the city’s population swells with millions of pilgrims. The incident underscores the inherent risks of military training flights and the critical importance of pilot training and safety protocols, especially over populous regions.

The successful ejection and survival of the crew highlight the effectiveness of IAF emergency procedures, even when technology fails. As rescue operations continue and the inquiry begins, the focus remains on the pilots’ safety and the lessons to be learned from this alarming incident near one of India’s largest religious gatherings.
