An Indian-origin doctoral student studying at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) has been found dead days after he went missing during a solo hiking trip in California's Big Pine Lakes region, authorities have confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as Vikram Mubayi, a PhD scholar in the university's Department of Chemical Engineering. His body was recovered from the Inyo National Forest following an extensive search operation conducted by local rescue teams.

Disappeared During Solo Trek

According to authorities, Mubayi was last heard from on August 1, when he shared his GPS coordinates with family members from a hiking trail in the Big Pine Lakes area at around 8:30 p.m.

Concern grew after he failed to return from the trek or respond to further communication. His family subsequently reported him missing, prompting an intensive search operation involving Inyo County Search and Rescue and the California Highway Patrol.

Search teams located his body on the evening of August 3.

Cause of Death Under Investigation

Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of death.

Authorities said there is currently no indication of foul play, but investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

No additional details have been released pending the completion of the official inquiry.

Experienced Outdoor Enthusiast

Family members described Mubayi as an experienced hiker who had undertaken outdoor activities for several years.

In an online post seeking public assistance during the search, relatives said he was familiar with hiking and had considerable experience navigating trails.

Mubayi had also written about his passion for the outdoors in a personal biography, crediting his mother for introducing him to hiking and tennis at an early age. He also enjoyed cycling and other outdoor sports.

Research Focused on Sustainable Technology

Before joining UCSB for doctoral studies, Mubayi earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2022.

During his undergraduate years, he worked as a research assistant at the Burke Laboratory and also served as a teaching assistant.

At UCSB, his doctoral research focused on developing sustainable alternatives to petroleum by studying bacteria and biological processes capable of breaking down plant waste and plastics. His work aimed to contribute to environmentally friendly technologies and advanced materials research.

University Community Mourns Loss

The news of Mubayi's death has deeply saddened members of the university community and fellow researchers.

Friends and colleagues remembered him as a dedicated researcher with a strong passion for science and environmental sustainability.

Authorities have not announced when the final investigation report will be released.
