Former United States president Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has spread beyond his bones and is causing substantial pain, his son Hunter Biden has said.

Hunter provided the update during an interview with BBC Newsnight, describing the illness as painful and physically debilitating for the 83-year-old former president.

A spokesperson for Joe Biden declined to provide further information about the extent of the disease.

Aggressive Cancer Diagnosed in 2025

Biden disclosed in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Medical information released at the time said the disease had metastasised to his bones and carried a Gleason score of nine, indicating a high-grade cancer.

His office said the cancer was hormone-sensitive, allowing doctors to manage it through available treatment options. Biden later underwent radiation and hormone therapy.

Hunter’s latest statement suggests that the disease has since spread further, although he did not identify the additional parts of the body affected.

Biden Remains Publicly Active

Despite his illness, the former president has continued to make selected public appearances and comment on political and social issues.

He attended the dedication of former president Barack Obama’s presidential library in Chicago in June. Biden served as Obama’s vice-president from 2009 to 2017 before winning the presidency in 2020.

A presidential memoir titled Promise Me, America is scheduled to be released on November 17.

Biden and his family have been closely associated with cancer-awareness efforts since the death of his elder son, Beau Biden, from brain cancer in 2015.
