Moti Masjid Barricade Row: Bhopal Police to Consult MANIT Traffic Experts

Traders say the restrictions have damaged business and blocked access to Chowk Bazaar, while police cite traffic-safety concerns.

Bhopal police will seek assistance from traffic experts at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology to develop an alternative movement plan around Moti Masjid Square following protests by old-city traders and residents.

Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar gave the assurance during a meeting with a delegation of traders and Bhopal MP Alok Sharma on Saturday.

The development follows a market shutdown and protest by traders from Chowk Bazaar, Lakherapura and surrounding commercial areas.

Traders Complain of Restricted Access

Traders allege that barricades installed near Moti Masjid have restricted access to Chowk Bazaar and adjoining markets for several months, affecting customers, deliveries and business activity.

Residents have also complained about congestion and the absence of convenient alternative routes. Protesters have sought either the removal of the barricades or a revised traffic arrangement.

Police have maintained that the restrictions were introduced to discourage wrong-side driving and reduce accidents at the busy junction.

MANIT Experts to Study Alternatives

Traffic specialists from MANIT are expected to study vehicle flow, turning movements, pedestrian access and possible alternative routes before suggesting a workable solution.

No immediate decision to remove the barricades has been announced.

Bhopal MP Alok Sharma called for all stakeholders to be heard and supported the preparation of a wider traffic and urban-development plan for the old city.

The proposed technical review could help authorities balance road safety with access to one of Bhopal’s busiest traditional commercial districts.
