India’s young athletes delivered three medals at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, with Basant Kumar Meghwal, Shahnavaz Khan and Ashish Yadav reaching the podium.

Nineteen-year-old Basant Meghwal won silver in the men’s high jump after clearing a personal-best height of 2.21 metres.

Meghwal successfully cleared 2.06m, 2.12m, 2.17m and 2.21m during the competition. His performance made him the first Indian high jumper to win a medal at the World U20 Championships.

Shahnavaz Khan Wins Long-Jump Bronze

Shahnavaz Khan added a bronze medal in the men’s long jump with a best effort of 7.84 metres.

The official World Athletics results placed Shahnavaz third in the final.

India’s R.C. Jithin Arjunan also qualified for the long-jump final and finished eighth.

Ashish Yadav Follows Neeraj Chopra’s Path

India’s first medal at the championships came from Ashish Yadav, who won silver in the men’s javelin throw.

The 19-year-old recorded a best throw of 74.09 metres in his third attempt. He became only the second Indian male javelin thrower to win a World U20 medal, following Neeraj Chopra’s gold-medal performance in 2016.

Ashish comes from Mawaiya village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district. Reports about his early career say he began training with locally made wooden javelins in an area near dried ponds before gaining access to better facilities.
