                <title>India Is Discovering Hundreds of New Animals—But Can It Save Them?</title>
                                    <description><![CDATA[<p>India added 709 faunal records in 2025, including 483 species new to science. In Madhya Pradesh, the hard-ground barasingha’s remarkable return reveals what it actually takes to stop extinction.</p>]]></description>

The hard-ground barasingha—a deer recognised by the elaborate antlers that give it the popular name “twelve-tined deer”—is breeding again in a landscape from which it had disappeared.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">This is not a sudden miracle. It is the result of years of habitat restoration, carefully planned translocations, veterinary care and daily monitoring. More importantly, it offers India a rare glimpse of what it takes to pull an animal back from the edge.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The hard-ground barasingha was once widespread across Central India. By 1967, hunting, habitat loss and disease had reduced its last surviving population in Kanha Tiger Reserve to just 66 animals.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Kanha protected and restored its meadows, managed breeding and reduced damaging pressures. The population reached around 800 by 2020. A scientific paper published in 2026 estimates that Kanha now supports about 1,100 animals.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But conservationists faced another problem: nearly the entire subspecies remained concentrated in one reserve. A severe disease outbreak, wildfire or another catastrophe could still undo decades of work.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Between 2015 and 2023, the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department moved 98 barasingha from Kanha to Satpura in seven phases. According to the <a href="https://www.conservationevidencejournal.com/reference/pdf/13142">peer-reviewed study published in Conservation Evidence Journal</a>, the Satpura population grew to 172 by 2023.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Wild-born fawns were recorded every year. The animals’ body condition was comparable to the Kanha population, while most recorded deaths resulted from predation or other natural causes.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Satpura had become a genuine second home—not merely an enclosure holding relocated animals.</p>
<h2>India is finding animals faster than ever</h2>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The barasingha recovery comes as scientists continue to reveal how much of India’s wildlife remains undocumented.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Zoological Survey of India’s latest <em>Animal Discoveries–2025</em> report, released in June 2026, added 709 faunal records to the national database. Of these, 483 species were new to science and 226 were species recorded in India for the first time.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">These additions raised India’s documented faunal diversity to 1,05,953 species. Kerala led the states with 98 new species, followed by West Bengal with 76, Karnataka with 67 and Arunachal Pradesh with 65, according to the <a href="https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2279277&amp;lang=1&amp;reg=3">ZSI figures released by the Environment Ministry</a>.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Discoveries have continued in 2026. ZSI scientists described two new lichen moths—<em>Caulocera hollowayi</em> from Sikkim and <em>Asura buxa</em> from West Bengal.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The discovery has a Madhya Pradesh connection: Dr Santosh Singh, one of the researchers, works at ZSI’s Central Zone Regional Centre in Jabalpur. Because their caterpillars feed on pollution-sensitive lichens, these moths can potentially help researchers understand ecosystem and air-quality changes.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But “new to science” does not mean newly created by nature. These animals may have existed for thousands or millions of years before people formally described them.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Some may occupy only one stream, cave, hill or forest patch. A species can therefore enter a scientific catalogue already threatened with extinction.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Discovery is the beginning of the conservation clock—not the finish line.</p>
<h2>So, how is India really doing?</h2>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">India’s record is mixed: genuine recoveries exist alongside animals still perilously close to disappearing.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The country’s estimated tiger population rose from 2,226 in 2014 to 3,682 in the latest national estimate. The Asiatic lion population increased from 523 to 891 over roughly the same decade, according to the <a href="https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2269147&amp;lang=1&amp;reg=3">Environment Ministry’s 2026 biodiversity review</a>.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Both are major conservation achievements. However, Asiatic lions remain concentrated within one broad landscape, while tiger recovery has not been uniform across every reserve.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The pygmy hog, the world’s smallest wild pig, offers another striking example. Once thought extinct, it was rediscovered in Assam in 1971.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Conservation breeding began with only a handful of animals, followed by grassland restoration and phased releases. By October 2024, <a href="https://www.durrell.org/news/nine-more-pygmy-hogs-return-to-their-historical-home-in-manas-national-park/">179 captive-bred pygmy hogs had been reintroduced</a> across four protected areas in Assam. Monitoring has also recorded hogs born in the wild.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Yet some species remain one bad season or poorly placed project away from disaster.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Critically Endangered Great Indian Bustard has a published global estimate of fewer than 150 birds. Habitat loss, disturbance and collisions with overhead power lines remain major threats, according to the <a href="https://portals.iucn.org/library/sites/library/files/resrecfiles/WCC_2020_REC_089_EN.pdf">IUCN’s conservation resolution</a>.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Lesser-known frogs, freshwater fish, insects and soil organisms may disappear with far less public attention.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">India has acknowledged a significant information gap. Its National Red List Roadmap, launched in 2025, aims to establish a nationally coordinated system for assessing extinction risk and publish national Red Data Books for fauna and flora by 2030.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Until that work is completed, the conservation status of many native species will remain uncertain.</p>
<h2>Has India saved an extinct animal?</h2>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">No country has successfully restored an animal after it became globally extinct. What India has achieved in several cases is preventing extinction when only a small population survived—or reversing local extinction through reintroduction.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The African cheetahs brought to India are an example of returning a species after it became locally extinct in the country. They are not the revival of India’s vanished Asiatic cheetah population.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The barasingha and pygmy hog are stronger examples of native animals being rescued before they disappeared completely.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">This distinction matters. “Rediscovered”, “reintroduced”, “population increase” and “saved from extinction” describe different scientific outcomes.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">A rising headcount is encouraging, but genuine recovery also requires healthy habitat, genetic diversity, multiple secure populations and the ability to survive without permanent intensive support.</p>
<h2>The lesson from Madhya Pradesh</h2>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The barasingha story shows that extinction is rarely prevented by one dramatic rescue. Kanha’s recovery took more than five decades.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Satpura’s second population required suitable grasslands, voluntary village relocation, phased transfers, predator-aware release sites, veterinary support and nine years of monitoring.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">It also shows why wildlife policy cannot focus only on tigers, lions and elephants. Saving a small moth, frog or soil arthropod may protect ecological functions that people notice only after they are lost—from pollination and nutrient recycling to clean water and healthy forests.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">India is discovering animals at an extraordinary pace. The harder test is whether it can protect their habitats quickly enough—and whether it can give an obscure new species the same chance that Madhya Pradesh gave the barasingha.</p>
<p>The deer standing again in Satpura’s grasslands is proof that decline can be reversed. It is also a warning: recovery is measured in decades, while extinction may need only one final blow.</p>]]></content:encoded>
