Yemen’s Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for a drone attack on Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery, adding a fresh layer of tension to an already volatile security situation in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy confirmed that a fire broke out at the refinery early on Sunday, August 9. The blaze was extinguished, and no injuries were reported.

However, the ministry did not disclose the cause of the fire or directly confirm the Houthi claim. Authorities were completing the necessary procedures to deal with the incident, according to the official statement reported by Reuters.

Houthis Claim Drone Was Used

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had targeted the Aramco facility with a drone. The claim could not immediately be independently verified.

The group also claimed attacks on other targets in the region. The Associated Press reported that the Houthis claimed to have struck the Jazan refinery and the strategic Yemeni port of Mocha.

The latest incident follows previous attacks on Saudi energy installations, including Aramco facilities in Jazan and Yanbu.

Why Jazan Refinery Is Important

The Jazan refinery is located in south-western Saudi Arabia, near the country’s border with Yemen. It is capable of processing approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

The facility produces petrol, ultra-low-sulphur diesel and other petroleum products. Its location near the Red Sea also gives it strategic importance as Saudi Arabia seeks alternative export routes amid disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi authorities did not immediately report whether the fire had affected production or refinery operations.

Aramco Chief Executive Amin Nasser said recently that attacks on the company’s facilities had caused some temporary production interruptions, but had not resulted in a material operational or financial impact.

Attack Follows New Three-Nation Defence Pact

The incident occurred only two days after Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed a joint defence agreement.

The agreement provides that an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be treated as an attack against all three. The arrangement has been compared with the collective-defence principle contained in Article 5 of the NATO treaty.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has maintained that the alliance is not directed against Iran or any other specific country. He described it as a broader commitment by the three countries to support each other’s security.

It remains unclear whether the reported Jazan incident will trigger any consultation or formal response under the new agreement.

Threat to Energy Supplies and Regional Stability

Repeated attacks on refineries, ports and shipping routes have increased concerns about the security of the Middle East’s energy infrastructure.

The Jazan fire was brought under control without casualties, but further attacks could disrupt refinery operations and fuel shipments. Any prolonged interruption involving major Saudi facilities or Red Sea shipping routes could place additional pressure on international oil prices.

The incident also comes as negotiations continue over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which handled about one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments before the current conflict severely disrupted maritime traffic.

Iran and Oman have indicated that they are close to an arrangement governing shipping through the strategic waterway. However, Iran has said that such an arrangement alone would not be enough to reopen the strait fully.

For now, the most important point is that Saudi Arabia has confirmed the refinery fire—but has not confirmed that a Houthi drone caused it. The story should therefore be updated if Saudi authorities release findings about the origin of the blaze, operational damage or their response under the new defence pact.
