Protests Intensify Across Bihar Over NEET Aspirant’s Rape-Death; Calls Grow for CM Nitish Kumar’s Resignation

Public anger escalated across Bihar on Wednesday as protests erupted in Patna, Gaya and Bhagalpur over the rape and death of a NEET aspirant, even as the police investigation showed no decisive breakthrough ten days after the incident. Women activists, students and opposition leaders demanded swift arrests, accountability of senior police officials and the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, citing delays and alleged administrative failure.

In the state capital, leaders and workers of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) led a demonstration near key government offices, holding placards and raising slogans against the government. Women protesters accused the administration of failing to ensure safety for girls and demanded immediate action against those responsible. Several RJD leaders said “good governance cannot remain a slogan” if crimes against women continue unchecked.

Parallel protests were held in Gaya, where students from GD Public School and Gyan Bharati Public School took out a justice march. Carrying placards reading “Arrest the accused,” “If daughters are not safe, the country is not safe,” and “Punish the monsters,” students urged authorities to act decisively and ensure exemplary punishment to deter similar crimes.

In Bhagalpur, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a protest march, alleging systemic failure in protecting female students. Participants demanded the suspension of the Patna Senior Superintendent of Police, arguing that lax enforcement had emboldened criminals. A student protester said continued inaction would force women to fight for their own safety, reflecting deep public frustration.

Opposition leaders sharpened their attack on the government. RJD leaders reiterated their demand for the Chief Minister’s resignation, alleging that incidents involving women, including those in hostels, point to serious governance gaps. RJD leader Tejpratap Yadav claimed that influential individuals’ relatives were involved and alleged attempts to suppress the case, assertions that authorities have not confirmed.

Meanwhile, the police said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is awaiting forensic reports and a medical opinion from AIIMS Patna. Officials said CCTV footage tracing the student’s movements from her arrival in Patna to her hospital admission has been collected. According to sources, the SIT has not found evidence of misconduct at the hostel so far, a claim contested by the victim’s family, which maintains she was assaulted before her death.

The case has intensified scrutiny of law enforcement and women’s safety in Bihar, with pressure mounting on the government to deliver a transparent investigation and restore public confidence.
