The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, seeks to amend the First Schedule of the Constitution, where the names and territories of states are listed.

“Keralam” is the Malayalam name commonly used for the state.

Kerala Assembly Backed Proposal

The Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on June 24, 2024, requesting the Union government to make the change.

The Union Cabinet approved the proposal in February 2026 and initiated the constitutional process required to bring the Bill before Parliament.

The Fourth Schedule, which contains provisions concerning Rajya Sabha representation, may also require a consequential amendment.

Has Kerala Already Been Renamed?

No. The introduction of the Bill does not immediately alter the state’s name.

The proposal must be considered and passed by both Houses of Parliament. It will become effective only after completing the legislative process and receiving presidential assent.

Until then, Kerala remains the state’s official constitutional name.

The proposal is among four Bills listed for introduction in the Lok Sabha, alongside legislation concerning tribunals and the regulation of mines and minerals.
