Thai police arrested a former lawmaker on Monday after shots were fired inside a local government office in Nonthaburi province, on the outskirts of Bangkok.

A senior provincial official and his driver were wounded and taken to hospital, Nonthaburi police commander Major General Dejrapee Kongdee said.

Officials had not disclosed their medical conditions or announced a possible motive at the time of reporting.

Second Major Shooting in Nonthaburi

The incident occurred three days after a 14-year-old boy carried out a shooting rampage at his home and Debsirin Nonthaburi School.

Authorities now say nine people, including the teenage shooter, were killed in Friday’s violence, while more than 20 others were wounded. The revised figure is higher than some preliminary casualty counts released immediately after the attack.

Monday’s government-office shooting is a separate incident. Authorities have not announced any connection between the two cases.

Security Increased at Schools

Students returning to classrooms on Monday faced metal detectors and additional security checks at some institutions.

Thailand’s Education Ministry plans to introduce new school-safety protocols within three months. The proposals include mental-health screening, emergency-response drills, measures against bullying and improved systems for detecting weapons and prohibited objects.

Prime Minister Orders Firearms Crackdown

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered tougher enforcement against people carrying firearms in public. Police checkpoints will also be established as part of the response.

The prime minister said carrying a weapon for claimed self-defence would not justify bringing it into a public place.

Thailand’s firearm-licensing system has faced renewed scrutiny following the shootings. Experts have highlighted the absence of mandatory mental-health screening for applicants and the lack of periodic reassessment for licence holders.

Investigators are expected to question the detained former lawmaker and examine how the firearm used in Monday’s attack was obtained.
