The Malaysian leader is undergoing examinations and medical procedures, but officials have not disclosed a diagnosis

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is undergoing medical examinations and procedures and is expected to remain under observation for two days, his office said on Monday.

Press Secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said a team of medical experts was supervising the examinations. No details about the procedures or any diagnosis were disclosed.

Officials Seek Quick Return to Duties

The statement expressed hope that Anwar would recover quickly and resume his official responsibilities. Anwar, who has served as prime minister since 2022, turned 79 on Monday.

The announcement did not say whether his scheduled government engagements would be postponed or handled by other ministers during the observation period.

Previous Shoulder and Back Problems

Anwar has previously experienced shoulder and back problems. He was admitted to hospital for related treatment in 2018 and cancelled a visit to Malaysia’s Pahang state in November because of back pain.

A hospital said in January that he had received a clean bill of health following a routine medical examination.

In the absence of an official diagnosis, reports should avoid attributing the current procedures to his earlier medical conditions.
