The Border Security Force has launched “Operation Alert” along India’s western international border ahead of Independence Day, intensifying surveillance against possible infiltration, drone incursions and cross-border smuggling.

The exercise began on August 10 and is scheduled to continue until August 17. Personnel from different BSF branches have been deployed in border areas, while senior officers are monitoring sensitive sectors.

Patrolling and Checkpoints Increased

Security measures include additional checkpoints, round-the-clock surveillance and intensified foot and camel patrols across difficult desert terrain.

The BSF is also conducting joint patrols with local police in rear areas and reviewing operational procedures to test how quickly units can respond to suspicious movement.

Special attention is reportedly being given to the Sri Ganganagar and Bikaner sectors, where drones have previously been used in attempts to transport narcotics and weapons across the border.

Focus on Drone-Based Smuggling

Drone-based smuggling has emerged as a major border-security challenge because small unmanned aircraft can carry narcotics, weapons or communication equipment across fenced areas.

BSF personnel have been directed to watch for unusual aerial activity and remain prepared to respond to attempted intrusions. Additional forces have reportedly been deployed at sensitive locations.

The exercise also includes communication with residents of border villages, who can play an important role in reporting suspicious people, vehicles or aerial activity.

Precautionary Security Exercise

Operation Alert is an enhanced preparedness exercise conducted around major national events. The heightened deployment should not, by itself, be interpreted as confirmation of a specific imminent attack.

The current operation is intended to deter infiltration and smuggling while checking whether existing security procedures are functioning effectively.
