Modi, Mayurbhanj and the Civilisational Recognition of Tribal India

The joint visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu has brought tribal identity, cultural heritage and inclusive development into the national spotlight.

The recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu to Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district has drawn attention beyond the announcement of development projects and official engagements. Observers say the visit reflects a broader shift in how India views its tribal communities, placing greater emphasis on their cultural contributions and historical significance alongside development priorities.

The significance of the visit lies in its symbolism as much as its governance agenda. For decades, discussions around tribal regions in India have largely focused on issues such as poverty, displacement, limited access to healthcare and education, and security concerns. While these challenges remain important policy priorities, there is increasing recognition of the role tribal communities have played in preserving cultural traditions, ecological knowledge and indigenous systems that have endured for generations.

The presence of both the Prime Minister and the President, India’s first tribal head of state, in Mayurbhanj has been viewed by many as a significant moment of national acknowledgment for tribal heritage. Analysts note that the visit reinforced the message that tribal communities are not only beneficiaries of welfare programmes but also important contributors to India's civilisational and cultural identity.

Development and Inclusion

Government initiatives over the past decade have increasingly combined development objectives with efforts to preserve tribal identity and traditions. Programmes focused on education, healthcare, road connectivity, digital infrastructure and livelihood generation have been expanded across several tribal regions.

Officials say initiatives aimed at Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, the expansion of residential schools for tribal students and support for forest-based livelihoods are part of a broader strategy to promote inclusive growth. The emphasis, according to policymakers, is on ensuring that economic development reaches tribal communities while respecting their social and cultural structures.

The same approach has also been visible in areas historically affected by Left Wing Extremism, where development and governance reforms have accompanied security measures. Policymakers argue that long-term stability depends on inclusion, opportunity and effective public services.

Recognition of Tribal Contributions

Beyond development, recent years have seen efforts to bring tribal leaders and freedom fighters into the national narrative. The observance of Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas and the establishment of museums dedicated to tribal freedom fighters are among the initiatives aimed at highlighting tribal contributions to India’s history.

Similarly, national recognition of leaders associated with tribal rights and social movements has been viewed as part of a wider effort to acknowledge communities that have often remained underrepresented in mainstream historical discourse.

President Droupadi Murmu’s rise from Mayurbhanj to the country’s highest constitutional office is frequently cited as a powerful example of democratic inclusion. Political observers believe her journey has strengthened representation and reinforced the idea that national institutions are accessible to citizens from all sections of society.

The visit also drew attention to the Santhali Jaher and Ho Jahera sacred groves, where the Prime Minister and President offered prayers. These sites are regarded as important cultural and spiritual spaces that reflect long-standing traditions of environmental stewardship and community life.

According to experts, such recognition carries significance beyond symbolism. It reflects a growing effort to integrate tribal knowledge systems, cultural heritage and ecological traditions into the broader national conversation.

As India continues to pursue economic growth and social development, policymakers and scholars suggest that preserving indigenous traditions while expanding opportunities will remain an important challenge. The developments in Mayurbhanj indicate that tribal heritage is increasingly being viewed as an integral part of India’s national story rather than a subject confined to the margins of public discourse.

When Raj Kapoor’s Baraat Came to Rewa: Death Anniversary Brings Back Lesser-Known Wedding Chapter

On Raj Kapoor’s death anniversary, revisit his little-known wedding to Krishna Malhotra in Rewa, MP, and how the city remains tied to the Kapoor family.

As India remembers the “Showman” of Hindi cinema Raj Kapoor on his death anniversary today, few recall that the legendary actor-filmmaker’s wedding procession did not wind through Mumbai’s streets but arrived in a modest town in Madhya Pradesh’s Vindhya region.

It was May 1946. Raj Kapoor, then a rising star, married Krishna Malhotra in Rewa – a city more famous for its white tigers than film industry weddings. The ceremony took place at a government bungalow belonging to Krishna’s father, Karta Nath Malhotra, who served as Inspector General of Police in the Vindhya region.

The event remained a quiet but significant chapter in the Kapoor family’s history, often overshadowed by the actor’s larger-than-life screen persona.

Wedding at the IG’s bungalow

According to historical accounts, Malhotra was posted in Rewa at the time of the wedding. The government bungalow, where the couple exchanged vows, became the unlikely venue for what would later be remembered as one of Bollywood’s most enduring marriages.

The ceremony was a low-key affair by industry standards, but locally it created quite a stir. “In those days, a wedding of this scale was unheard of in Rewa,” says a local resident familiar with the city’s oral history. Sources confirm that the bungalow still stands, though it has undergone renovations over the decades.

Krishna Malhotra, who later became known as Krishna Raj Kapoor, remained Rewa’s connection to the Kapoor dynasty for the rest of her life.

Auditorium named after Krishna Raj Kapoor

Decades later, Rewa chose to honour that bond. The city constructed the ‘Krishna Raj Kapoor Auditorium’ – a facility now used for cultural programmes, government events and industrial gatherings. It stands as a physical reminder of the family’s link to central India.

When Rishi Kapoor passed away in 2020, national media revisited Rewa’s historical association with the Kapoors. The auditorium became a gathering point for local tributes. For Rewa’s residents, the building is more than just infrastructure; it is a symbol of an unlikely but cherished connection to Bollywood royalty.

A daughter named after Rewa

Locals have long circulated another fascinating detail. It is believed that Raj Kapoor and Krishna named their daughter Reema Jain after the city of Rewa. The story, passed down through generations, reflects the couple’s deep affection for the town where their married life began.

Whether entirely accurate or embellished by time, the anecdote survives in Rewa’s collective memory. Ask any elderly resident, and they will narrate it with pride – a small-town claim to a piece of cinema history.

Rewa’s pride beyond white tigers

Rewa is globally known for the introduction of white tigers and its royal heritage. But the Raj Kapoor wedding chapter adds a different flavour to its identity – one that intersects with the golden era of Hindi cinema.

Raj Kapoor, through films like Awara, Shree 420, Barsaat, Sangam and Mera Naam Joker, gave voice to the common man’s struggles while taking Indian cinema to international audiences. His songs remain hugely popular in Russia and other countries even today.

That such a towering figure chose Rewa for one of the most personal milestones of his life continues to be a matter of pride for the city. On his death anniversary, as film buffs pay tribute to the showman, Rewa quietly remembers the baraat that came to its streets nearly eight decades ago.

Religious activities resumed at the historic Bhojshala complex in Dhar on Sunday following the implementation of new guidelines issued by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Large numbers of Hindu devotees gathered at the site from early morning and offered prayers dedicated to Maa Vagdevi inside the premises. The reopening of worship arrangements under the revised framework created a festive atmosphere at the Bhojshala complex, with devotees carrying pictures of Maa Vagdevi and participating in traditional rituals. Authorities maintained security and monitoring arrangements during the religious activities.

Purification Ritual Performed

Before the Pooja rituals began, devotees and organisers carried out a purification ceremony inside the complex using cow urine, considered sacred in Hindu traditions. The sanctum area was decorated with colourful rangoli designs while priests and devotees performed rituals according to traditional customs. Organisers also shifted the eternal flame from the Jyoti Temple located outside the Bhojshala premises into the sanctum area for the special prayers. Religious chants and mantra recitations began at sunrise and continued through the morning hours.

Devotees Show Enthusiasm

A strong sense of enthusiasm was visible among devotees gathered at the Bhojshala complex. Several worshippers were seen celebrating with devotional songs and traditional dance performances after the commencement of the rituals. Members of Hindu organisations described the occasion as significant following the implementation of the new ASI guidelines regarding worship practices at the disputed historical site. The development remained one of the major Public Interest Story updates in Madhya Pradesh due to the long-standing religious and legal sensitivity linked to the Bhojshala complex.

Leaders Visit Bhojshala

On Saturday evening, Union Minister of State Savitri Thakur and saint Mahamandaleshwar Nisarg Das Maharaj visited Bhojshala to offer prayers. Dhar Collector Rajeev Ranjan Meena and Superintendent of Police Sachin Sharma also reached the premises and participated in the worship programme. Speaking during the visit, Savitri Thakur congratulated devotees and said the atmosphere around the site had become peaceful. She stated that earlier Fridays often witnessed tension around the complex, but the situation has now normalised.

Government Promises Development

The Union Minister further said devotees can now visit the site freely for darshan and worship. She also referred to the statement of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav regarding plans to develop Bhojshala in a more organised and attractive manner. According to government representatives, efforts are being planned to restore and develop the site while preserving its historical and cultural significance. Officials indicated that the objective is to promote Bhojshala as an important religious and heritage destination for visitors from across the country.

Hindu Groups Participate

Members of the Bhoj Utsav Samiti and local Hindu organisations reached the Bhojshala complex before sunrise on Sunday to oversee preparations. Bhoj Utsav Samiti general secretary Sumit Choudhary said purification rituals and Devi Anushthan programmes started early in the morning and continued throughout the day. He stated that a Maha Aarti by members of Hindu society was scheduled for 11:45 am. Organisation members also said discussions were underway regarding the future development and beautification of the complex.

Historical Significance Highlighted

Bhojshala has remained a historically and politically significant site in Madhya Pradesh for several decades due to competing religious claims associated with the complex. The latest ASI guidelines and reopening of worship arrangements have once again brought the site into public focus. Religious groups have welcomed the changes, while administrative authorities continue to monitor the situation to maintain law and order. Officials and religious groups indicated that further planning is underway to enhance facilities and preserve the heritage value of Bhojshala. The state government has also expressed interest in restoring the site’s historic grandeur.

In an exclusive interview with Dainik Jagran, Madhya Pradesh’s Nodal Head for the Gyan Bharatam Mission, Nilesh Lokhande, detailed how the national initiative is uncovering centuries-old manuscripts through technology and public participation.

Interview Highlights Mission Goals

The Union Ministry of Culture launched the Gyan Bharatam Mission following its announcement in the Union Budget 2025 (Paragraph 84). Madhya Pradesh has moved swiftly, with the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums leading the state-level rollout. The 90-day National Manuscript Survey, running from March to May 2026, aims to map manuscripts across all districts.

Nodal Officer Shares Progress

Speaking to Dainik Jagran , Lokhande explained the core objective. “Our rich knowledge tradition is preserved in old records and ancient manuscripts that hold immense medicinal, literary and religious wisdom,” he said. Many such treasures remain tucked away in homes and temples, untouched by modern documentation. The mission seeks to bring this hidden heritage into the light without disturbing private ownership.

Gyan Bharatam App Empowers Citizens

A user-friendly mobile application is at the heart of the drive. Citizens can download the Gyan Bharatam App from the Google Play Store and upload details in seven simple steps — personal information, preferred language, followed by manuscript specifics such as quantity, script, material (paper, palm leaf or others) and current condition. “The process is straightforward and completely voluntary,” Lokhande noted. Since the app’s official launch on 16 March 2026, more than 75,000 manuscripts have already been reported from various institutions and districts in Madhya Pradesh.

House-to-House Survey Underway

Beyond digital reporting, teams will conduct physical outreach. Local administration will visit homes, temples and private collections to verify entries and encourage participation. Lokhande clarified that the government will digitise and conserve manuscripts only with consent. “Physical ownership stays with the custodians. We create digital copies for preservation and return the originals safely,” he assured.

Committees Ensure Smooth Coordination

An MoU between the Centre and state government has paved the way for structured implementation. A state-level committee has been formed, followed by district-level bodies that will oversee ground-level surveys. These panels will assess the historical importance of reported items and coordinate further digitisation work. The entire exercise is designed to run in phases, ensuring every corner of Madhya Pradesh is covered within the stipulated 90 days.

Rich Manuscript Tradition at Stake

India’s manuscript heritage represents generations of accumulated knowledge copied painstakingly by hand long before printing technology existed. Many valuable texts still lie in private custody, vulnerable to time and neglect. The Gyan Bharatam Mission combines modern tools with grassroots effort to safeguard this legacy. In Madhya Pradesh, the response so far signals strong public enthusiasm for protecting cultural assets that connect the past with the future.

Digitisation and Conservation Planned

Once verified, selected manuscripts will undergo professional scanning and, where needed, expert conservation. The digitised versions will eventually be made accessible to researchers and scholars while originals remain in private hands. Mr Lokhande emphasised that the mission is a collective national endeavour, with Madhya Pradesh playing an active role.

Public Call to Preserve Heritage

With the survey gaining momentum, officials urge citizens across the state to download the Gyan Bharatam App and share information about any manuscripts in their possession or knowledge. “Your contribution can help secure centuries of wisdom for coming generations,” Lokhande told Dainik Jagran. The next few weeks are critical as the 90-day window progresses, and more reports are expected from remote areas.

The 138-year-old Kothi Palace in Ujjain is being transformed into the Veer Bharat Museum, with the state government allocating ₹20 crore to blend modern immersive experiences with the city’s historic legacy.

The religious capital of Madhya Pradesh is set to add a major cultural landmark to its identity. Officials have confirmed that the historic Kothi Palace, a structure nearly 138 years old, will soon reopen as the Veer Bharat Museum. The restoration project, sanctioned by the state government, carries an estimated budget of ₹20 crore and aims to preserve the building’s heritage while introducing modern exhibition techniques.

A Historic Structure Reimagined

Spread across approximately two acres, the palace originally served as a key administrative center during the Scindia state’s rule. For several decades following independence, it functioned as the Collector’s office. With administrative operations shifting to a new facility, the old palace was vacated, paving the way for this redevelopment.

Restoration work has now picked up significant pace on the ground. According to officials overseeing the project, the construction is expected to be completed within the next year, after which the museum will be thrown open to the public.

Entire Indian History Under One Roof

The museum’s design focuses on presenting a wide historical narrative, moving beyond regional boundaries. Visitors will encounter stories spanning from the Vedic period and the Ramayana-Mahabharata era to the reign of Emperor Vikramaditya and the modern freedom movement.

Officials stated that the objective is to create a seamless timeline, allowing visitors to explore the lives and legacies of key historical figures in a single, structured space. The shift from a purely administrative building to a cultural repository marks a significant change in how the city manages its heritage assets.

An Inspiring World of Warriors, Saints, and Scholars

The curatorial plan for the Veer Bharat Museum places a strong emphasis on biographical storytelling. The galleries will feature dedicated sections for freedom fighters such as Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, and Mahatma Gandhi.

Alongside the political leaders, the museum will highlight the contributions of spiritual and intellectual figures, including Swami Vivekananda, Adi Shankaracharya, and Guru Gobind Singh. This blend is intended to present a holistic view of India’s cultural and political evolution, appealing to both students of history and casual tourists.

A Major Attraction for Religious and Heritage Tourism

Ujjain is already a prominent hub for religious tourism, drawing lakhs of pilgrims to the Mahakaleshwar Temple annually. The addition of the Veer Bharat Museum is expected to diversify the city’s tourism profile.

“This will be one of the first such spaces in the country where visitors can understand the continuum from the Vedic period to the freedom struggle in an immersive setting,” an official involved with the Veer Bharat Trust explained. The trust is overseeing the project to ensure the exhibits meet modern museology standards.

What Next for the Heritage Site

With the construction deadline set for roughly one year, local tour operators and historians have expressed optimism about the project. The transformation is viewed not merely as the renovation of a dilapidated building, but as an effort to bridge the gap between the younger generation and India’s layered history.

Once operational, the museum is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists, adding a new dimension to Ujjain’s identity beyond its religious significance. The government has assured that the architectural integrity of the 138-year-old palace will be maintained throughout the modernization process.

Across India on December 25th, citizens and institutions are commemorating the 164th birth anniversary of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the revered educationist, freedom fighter, and founder of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

This year's Jayanti is marked by official tributes and cultural events that reflect on his enduring vision for a self-reliant and educated India.

A Legacy Remembered in Ghazipur and Varanasi

Commemorations began ahead of the Jayanti, with Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha attending a special function in Ghazipur honoring both Malaviya and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In his address, the LG highlighted Malaviya's role as a "main architect" of modern education and industrial development in India.

He described "Mahamana"—a title given to Malaviya by Mahatma Gandhi—as an independent thinker determined to change the nation's fate by empowering its youth. The LG noted that Malaviya's 20th-century vision for self-reliance, technical education, and women's education was fundamentally aimed at building an "Atma-Nirbhar Bharat".

Concurrently, in Varanasi—the home of BHU—a special photo exhibition titled 'Mahamana, A Multidimensional Personality: Time and Struggle' is on display at the Malaviya Mulya Anusheelan Kendra.

The exhibition, open until January 3rd, is part of the university's birth anniversary celebrations and showcases the multifaceted life of its founder.

The Timeless Relevance of a "Karmayogi"

Why does the legacy of a leader born in 1861 resonate so powerfully today? Malaviya was not just an educationist but a social reformer and unifying force.

He was a four-time president of the Indian National Congress and played a crucial role in the freedom struggle, even participating in Mahatma Gandhi's Salt Satyagraha.

His contributions extend far beyond the establishment of BHU in 1916. He was instrumental in:

Ending the exploitative Indian indenture system in the Caribbean.

Advocating for Hindu-Muslim unity through powerful speeches on communal harmony.

Popularizing the national motto "Satyamev Jayate" (Truth Alone Triumphs), which originates from the Mundaka Upanishad.

Pioneering journalism in Hindi, founding publications like Abhyudaya and Maryada.

A staunch critic of caste discrimination, his progressive views were so strong that he was expelled from his own Brahmin community. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan aptly called him a "Karmayogi," a spiritual stalwart dedicated to action.

A Blueprint for a "Viksit Bharat"

The contemporary significance of Malaviya Jayanti lies in applying his principles to modern challenges. At the Ghazipur event, the LG articulated this connection, stating that following Malaviya's ideals is essential to "build a strong and prosperous India" and achieve the goal of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047.

Malaviya’s core mantras were "devotion to God through right conduct" and "service to the nation with total dedication". In today's context, this translates to a commitment to ethical nation-building, inclusive growth, and educational empowerment.

As India celebrates this Jayanti, the tributes to Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya move beyond mere remembrance. They serve as a yearly reaffirmation of the values he championed—education as liberation, unity in diversity, and service to the nation—providing a timeless blueprint for India's continued journey toward becoming a self-reliant knowledge power.
