Five MP Airstrips to Become Airports, Singrauli Gets Priority

Five Madhya Pradesh airstrips have received initial approval for airport upgrades, with Singrauli identified as the first priority.

Madhya Pradesh’s regional aviation network is set for another expansion after the Union Civil Aviation Ministry approved the first phase of a proposal to convert five existing airstrips into operational airports.

Singrauli has been identified as the first priority under the programme. The broader state proposal covers 10 airstrips and is intended to connect industrial, tourism and underserved districts with the national aviation network.

The project is linked to the modified UDAN regional-connectivity programme, which is being implemented between 2026–27 and 2035–36 with a national outlay of ₹28,840 crore.

What Will Be Required?

Conversion of an airstrip into a commercial airport generally requires runway assessment or expansion, construction of a passenger terminal, security infrastructure, fire and rescue facilities, navigation systems and regulatory clearance.

Airlines must then show commercial interest in operating particular routes. Consequently, approval for an airport upgrade does not mean that passenger flights will begin immediately.

No airline, route schedule or date for beginning services from the five proposed airports has been formally announced.

Why Singrauli Is Important

Singrauli is a major energy and industrial centre but continues to depend heavily on road and rail connectivity. A functioning commercial airport could reduce travel time for workers, investors and residents while improving access to specialised healthcare and administrative centres.

The airport could potentially support the wider Singrauli–Sonbhadra industrial belt. However, actual connectivity will depend on airline bidding, passenger demand and completion of aviation infrastructure.

MP’s Wider Aviation Plan

Madhya Pradesh has adopted a ‘150-75-45’ connectivity vision—an airport within approximately 150 kilometres, an airstrip within 75 kilometres and a helipad within 45 kilometres.

Regional facilities at Rewa, Satna and Datia have already been developed, while projects involving Ujjain and Shivpuri are also progressing.

The government is expected to issue a project-wise list, expenditure estimates and development timelines for the newly selected airstrips.
