North Korea fired a ballistic missile towards the sea off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast on Wednesday, days before the United States and South Korea begin one of their largest annual joint military exercises.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile was launched from the Wonsan area on North Korea’s east coast at about 6 am local time. South Korean and Japanese defence authorities estimated that it flew around 700 km before falling into the sea.

The launch came six days after another ballistic missile was fired from the same area. Pyongyang did not immediately issue a statement identifying the weapon used in Wednesday’s test.

South Korean officials also did not classify it as a specific missile type while technical analysis continued. Missiles with ranges between 300 km and 1,000 km are generally considered short-range ballistic missiles, but analysts said the launch profile left open other possibilities.

Timing raises tensions before Ulchi Freedom Shield

The US and South Korea are scheduled to hold their Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises from August 17 to 27. The drills are designed to test the allies’ ability to respond to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile capabilities.

Pyongyang has long denounced joint US–South Korean exercises as rehearsals for invasion. Seoul and Washington describe them as defensive and necessary to maintain readiness.

Hong Min, a researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, told Reuters that the launch could be part of North Korea’s planned weapons-development programme. However, he said the timing may also have been chosen to send a political signal before the exercises.

Wednesday’s launch was North Korea’s 11th suspected ballistic-missile test of 2026, according to South Korean assessments. Its tests this year have included short-range missiles, artillery rockets and other tactical weapons.

South Korea and Japan condemn launch

South Korea’s National Security Office convened an emergency meeting and urged Pyongyang to stop actions that violate United Nations Security Council resolutions. The South Korean military said it was maintaining a combined defence posture with the United States.

Japan also lodged a protest through diplomatic channels in Beijing. Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi condemned the launch, while authorities continued to assess its flight and possible missile type.

The US Indo-Pacific Command said it was consulting allies and partners. Its initial assessment was that the launch posed no immediate threat to US personnel, territory or allies.

The latest test adds to concern over security in Northeast Asia. North Korea has continued expanding its missile arsenal despite international sanctions, while South Korea, Japan and the United States have increased military coordination.

The launch could also complicate any attempt to revive diplomacy with Pyongyang. Talks aimed at limiting North Korea’s nuclear programme have remained stalled, with the two sides divided over sanctions relief, security guarantees and the sequence of disarmament measures.

For India, instability on the Korean Peninsula has economic as well as strategic implications. Any serious escalation could affect Asian markets, global electronics supply chains and shipping routes. New Delhi has consistently supported peace and denuclearisation through dialogue while implementing UN sanctions against North Korea.

The immediate focus will now be on whether Pyongyang announces further tests or military activity during Ulchi Freedom Shield. North Korea has often responded to major allied drills with missile launches, military statements or exercises of its own.
