Bangladesh dismissed Australia for their lowest Test total against them, with Hasan Mahmud taking a career-best 6/55 and Steve Smith scoring 71 in Darwin.

Bangladesh produced a superb bowling performance on the opening day of the first Test in Darwin, dismissing Australia for 198 in 53 overs. The total is Australia's lowest in Test cricket against Bangladesh, beating the previous low of 217 recorded in the 2017 Mirpur Test.

Bangladesh then made a strong start with the bat and reached 96 for one at stumps, leaving them just 102 runs behind Australia with nine wickets in hand.

Hasan Mahmud Leads Attack

Hasan Mahmud was the outstanding bowler for Bangladesh, finishing with 6/55 from 17 overs. It was the fast bowler's best figures in Test cricket and the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler against Australia in men's Tests.

Hasan repeatedly troubled Australia's top and lower order with disciplined pace bowling. He removed Jake Weatherald, Travis Head, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.

His six-wicket haul also gave Bangladesh control of an innings in which Australia struggled to build partnerships.

Smith Fights Alone

Steve Smith provided Australia's main resistance with a patient 71 from 109 balls. He struck seven fours and one six but could not carry the hosts to a competitive total.

Smith added 55 runs with Alex Carey for the fifth wicket, Australia's biggest partnership of the innings. Carey made 19 before Bangladesh broke the stand and began another collapse.

Smith eventually became Hasan Mahmud's third wicket, leaving Australia vulnerable in the lower order.

Top Order Fails Again

Australia lost four wickets for 74 runs before lunch, putting the hosts under immediate pressure.

Weatherald made 23 before Hasan removed him, while Travis Head also fell to the same bowler soon afterwards. Marnus Labuschagne made only one, and Cameron Green contributed 13.

After Smith and Carey briefly stabilised the innings, Australia lost their final wickets rapidly. Beau Webster made 12, Cummins scored nine and Starc managed only one. Lyon fell to Hasan as the innings ended on 198.

Bangladesh Make Strong Reply

Bangladesh's response gave the visitors an even stronger position by the close of play.

Shadman Islam was the only Bangladesh batter dismissed, while Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque remained at the crease at stumps. Bangladesh finished the day on 96/1 and trail by only 102 runs.

The visitors now have a significant opportunity to establish a first-innings lead when play resumes on the second day.

Australia Face Pressure

The first-day collapse raises questions about Australia's batting depth, particularly after several established batters failed to convert starts.

Labuschagne's dismissal for one added to the scrutiny around his recent Test form. He again failed to reach fifty, extending his run without a Test half-century.

Australia, however, still have a chance to recover if their bowlers can make early inroads into Bangladesh's batting line-up on Friday.

Bangladesh Eye Historic Position

Bangladesh entered the series after a long wait to play a Test series in Australia. The current tour is also the country's first Test visit to Australia since 2003.

The visitors now have the advantage after the opening day's play. Hasan Mahmud's career-best spell has already placed Bangladesh in a strong position, while Australia's 198 has given the tourists a realistic chance of taking a substantial first-innings lead.

Bangladesh vs Australia has begun with a dramatic Australian collapse, and Hasan Mahmud's six-wicket performance has put the visitors firmly on top after Day 1.
