Madhya Pradesh has banned analogue paneer following restrictions in neighbouring states. The government says the move will protect consumers, promote natural milk-based products and support the state’s dairy sector.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced the ban on analogue paneer on Wednesday, August 12, saying the state would focus on natural dairy products and expand milk production.

With the decision, Madhya Pradesh has become the fourth state to impose restrictions on analogue paneer after Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Yadav said the government wants Madhya Pradesh to build its identity around natural milk products and increase the production of genuine paneer.

CM Mohan Yadav Backs Natural Dairy

Yadav said the state was already working to increase milk production and would not encourage the sale of analogue paneer.

The government’s approach is aimed at strengthening the natural dairy sector while ensuring that products marketed as paneer meet expected standards.

The announcement also comes amid concerns that analogue paneer could enter Madhya Pradesh from neighbouring states where restrictions have already been introduced.

Why Analogue Paneer Is Different

Analogue paneer resembles conventional paneer but is not made entirely from milk. Depending on the formulation, some or all milk components can be replaced with vegetable fats, proteins and other ingredients.

The use of substitutes can significantly lower manufacturing costs compared with traditional milk-based paneer.

The issue for consumers arises when such products are not clearly identified and are sold in a way that could make buyers believe they are purchasing conventional paneer.

Government Cites Consumer Protection

Madhya Pradesh Public Health and Medical Education Minister Narendra Shivaji Patel said the decision was taken following the chief minister’s directions.

Patel said authorities had received reports that analogue paneer could be diverted into Madhya Pradesh after neighbouring states introduced restrictions.

The state therefore decided to prohibit the product rather than allow the market to become a destination for supplies restricted elsewhere.

Food Safety Concerns

Food safety authorities have raised concerns over the possibility of cheaper substitutes being presented as genuine paneer without adequate information about their composition.

For ordinary consumers, distinguishing between traditional paneer and analogue products can be difficult based on appearance alone.

The government’s decision is therefore expected to put greater emphasis on the composition and proper identification of dairy products sold in the state.

Other States Have Taken Action

Madhya Pradesh joins a growing list of states taking action against analogue or artificial paneer products.

Maharashtra has prohibited the manufacture, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of analogue or artificial paneer.

Chhattisgarh has imposed restrictions on non-standard dairy analogue products, including paneer, cream and butter. Gujarat has also taken action against the manufacture and sale of such products.

The measures reflect concerns over products that resemble conventional dairy items but use substitutes for some or all milk components.

Focus on Dairy Production

The Madhya Pradesh government is linking the ban with its broader plan to increase milk production and promote natural dairy products.

The state has indicated that it wants consumers and producers to rely more on conventional milk-based products while strengthening the dairy economy.

For consumers, the move could mean increased scrutiny of paneer products available in the market. For dairy producers, it may create greater demand for genuine milk-based paneer.

What the Ban Means for Consumers

The key objective is to prevent consumers from unknowingly purchasing a substitute product as conventional paneer.

Consumers should continue checking packaging, product descriptions and ingredient information when buying packaged dairy products. Fresh paneer should also be purchased from reliable sources.

The Madhya Pradesh government's decision marks a significant step in regulating analogue paneer and comes as several states tighten restrictions on similar products.

The state now faces the task of ensuring that the ban is effectively enforced across manufacturing, storage, transportation and retail channels while maintaining adequate supplies of genuine dairy products.
