India vs Sri Lanka: Captain Shubman Gill has stressed the importance of the two-Test series as India begin their World Test Championship campaign in Galle, with qualification for next year’s final the primary target.

Gill Sets WTC Target

India captain Shubman Gill has underlined the importance of winning the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka as the team looks to strengthen its chances of reaching the World Test Championship final.

The first Test begins at Galle International Stadium on Saturday, August 15. Gill said India may need to win around six or seven of their remaining Tests to remain in contention for a place in the WTC final.

The two-Test series therefore carries significance beyond the immediate contest, with every result affecting India’s position in the 2025-27 WTC cycle.

Historic Test At Galle

The opening Test comes with several milestones. It will be India’s 600th Test, while the Galle International Stadium is set to host its 50th Test.

For Gill, the match will also mark his 10th Test as India’s captain. The 26-year-old batter took over the leadership role in Test cricket from Rohit Sharma and has since begun shaping a new phase for the side.

India currently sit fifth in the WTC standings, while Sri Lanka are sixth. The two teams are separated by a narrow margin in the race for points and will both view the series as an opportunity to improve their qualification prospects.

Galle Conditions In Focus

The picturesque Galle venue could present a demanding challenge for the batters. The ground’s coastal location also brings strong and sometimes unpredictable winds into play.
