Indian football sees major changes as Churchill Brothers acquire Jamshedpur FC, India withdraw from the FIFA ASEAN Cup and East Bengal secure continental qualification.

Jamshedpur Changes Hands

Indian football has entered another period of upheaval, with Churchill Brothers FC taking over Jamshedpur FC from the Tata Group for a reported sum of ₹100.

The deal includes Jamshedpur’s Indian Super League sporting licence and player contracts, allowing Churchill Brothers to return to India’s top division after a year away from competitive football.

The development follows a turbulent period for Churchill Brothers after the club stayed outside the system in protest against the All India Football Federation’s decision to accept a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling involving Inter Kashi and the I-League title.

Churchill Brothers Return

Churchill Brothers had spent the previous season outside the national football structure and did not play competitive football.

The takeover now gives the Goa-based club a route back into the top tier without having to rebuild its squad and sporting infrastructure from scratch.

The reported ₹100 transaction has also raised questions about the commercial value of ISL clubs and the wider financial structure of Indian football.

India Drop ASEAN Cup

India have also decided against participating in the FIFA ASEAN Cup and will instead play a high-profile friendly against Brazil.

The Brazil fixture offers substantial publicity and an opportunity to face one of football’s biggest national teams. However, the decision to withdraw from a competitive regional tournament has triggered debate over India’s footballing priorities.

India recently failed to qualify for the Asian Cup after struggling against teams including Singapore and Hong Kong. Competitive matches against regional opponents could have offered valuable preparation during the rebuilding phase.

Competitive Football Debate

The decision has become more significant because India are entering an Asian Cup-less cycle.

The All India Football Federation has indicated that it plans to arrange two additional high-profile friendlies to compensate for the withdrawal. However, friendlies cannot fully replicate the pressure and competitive intensity of tournament football.

With Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti expected to experiment with his squad, India could also have considered using a younger or U23-heavy side for the friendly while retaining the senior group for competitive fixtures.

ISL Start Date Unclear

The start date of the next Indian Super League season remains uncertain.

AIFF deputy general secretary M Satyanarayana told PTI that the league would begin on September 4. However, sources cited by ESPN have indicated that the club-led competition could start on October 9.

The conflicting timelines have added to uncertainty around preparations for clubs, players and supporters ahead of the new season.

U15 World Cup Debate

Another controversy has emerged around India’s U15 participation in the FIFA World Cup & Festival scheduled for late October.

The discussion has centred on Bibiano Fernandes, who currently coaches India’s U17 national team, and Minerva Academy FC owner Ranjit Bajaj, who was linked with the manager’s role.

The distinction between a manager and coach has become central to the debate. The manager handles administrative and logistical responsibilities, while the coach oversees footballing matters, including tactics and player development.

The FIFA event itself follows a developmental format, with eight-a-side matches, unlimited rolling substitutions and guaranteed multiple games for participating teams.

East Bengal Deliver

Amid the uncertainty, East Bengal provided Indian football with a major positive result.

The Kolkata club defeated Kuwait’s Al Arabi SC 4-1 after extra time to secure India’s presence in the AFC Champions League Two.

Jay Gupta scored a late equaliser in the 90th minute before Mohammed Rashid put East Bengal ahead in extra time. David Lalhlansanga then added a goal and assisted Rohit Danu as East Bengal completed a convincing victory.

FC Goa, meanwhile, suffered a 0-3 defeat against FK Arkadag and dropped into the AFC Challenge League, the third tier of Asian club competition.

For Indian football, the contrasting developments underline a season of major structural changes, uncertain scheduling and mixed fortunes on the continental stage.
