Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani’s Awarapan 2 opened strongly on August 14, earning an estimated ₹21 crore net in India and about ₹27.2 crore worldwide on Day 1. The sequel has delivered Hashmi’s biggest opening-day haul.

Awarapan 2 has made an impressive start at the box office, benefiting from the Independence Day weekend and strong nostalgia for the 2007 original. According to early estimates cited by Times of India, the film collected around ₹21 crore net in India on its opening day, while its India gross stood at approximately ₹25.2 crore.

With an estimated ₹2 crore from overseas markets, the film’s worldwide opening-day gross reached about ₹27.2 crore.

Emraan Hashmi Gets His Biggest Opener

The opening marks a major milestone for Emraan Hashmi. Before Awarapan 2, his strongest opening-day figure came from Baadshaho, which earned ₹12.60 crore net in 2017.

Other notable opening figures include Raaz 3, which began with around ₹10.47 crore, and Raaz Reboot, which opened at approximately ₹5.30 crore.

With its estimated ₹21 crore India net, Awarapan 2 has comfortably moved past those numbers to become Hashmi’s biggest opening-day grosser.

Advance Booking Built Early Momentum

The film had already generated considerable interest before its theatrical release. Advance bookings reportedly contributed around ₹11.36 crore, including blocked seats.

The stronger final opening indicates that walk-in audiences and spot bookings added substantial momentum on Friday. The sequel’s Independence Day weekend release also gave it access to a potentially larger audience base.

Early trade predictions had been considerably lower, with some forecasts placing the film in the ₹12-17 crore net range. Its actual opening therefore represents a stronger-than-expected start.

Sequel Outperforms 2007 Original

The difference between the two Awarapan films is striking at the box office. The original, released in 2007 and directed by Mohit Suri, opened to only about ₹79 lakh on its first day.

Despite its modest theatrical beginning, the original gradually developed a cult following, particularly because of its emotional storyline, music and Hashmi’s performance as Shivam.

Nearly two decades later, the sequel has benefited from that nostalgia and has earned several times the original film’s opening-day collection in just one day.

Awarapan 2 Beats Spider-Man at Box Office

The strong debut has also put Awarapan 2 ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in Friday’s reported India collections.

The Emraan Hashmi-led sequel reportedly earned around ₹21 crore net on Day 1, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected approximately ₹3.90 crore on its third Friday. The Hollywood release had nevertheless enjoyed a strong run in India before the arrival of the new Hindi release.

The comparison highlights the scale of Awarapan 2’s opening, particularly considering the film’s relatively modest pre-release expectations.

Emraan Hashmi Wins Audience Praise

The film has also received encouraging reactions from audiences. Viewers have particularly praised Hashmi’s intense performance, the action sequences, music and the darker treatment of his character.

Disha Patani plays Zara, while veteran actor Shabana Azmi appears as Nafisa, a negative character. India Today had earlier reported Azmi’s casting and described Nafisa as an influential figure in the film’s criminal world.

The film brings Hashmi back as Shivam Pandit, the character he originally played in Awarapan. The sequel was directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt.

Music Remains Central to the Franchise

Music continues to be one of the major attractions surrounding the Awarapan franchise. The sequel features compositions from Mithoon, Jeet Gannguli and Amaal Mallik, among others, with lyrics from several writers.

The film’s creative team has emphasised the role of songs as part of the storytelling rather than simply promotional material. That approach follows the musical identity established by the original, whose songs became an important part of its long-term popularity.

With a strong opening already in the bag, Awarapan 2 now faces the crucial Independence Day weekend. Sustained audience interest, Saturday and Sunday growth and positive word-of-mouth will determine whether its impressive Day 1 performance translates into a bigger theatrical success.
