Hundreds of Drones Target Russia

Ukraine launched one of its largest aerial offensives of the war on Sunday, sending hundreds of drones towards targets across Russia, including areas around Moscow.

Russia's Defence Ministry said it had intercepted or destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said around 600 drones had been detected heading towards the Russian capital, with roughly one-third destroyed over the Moscow region.

The scale of the reported attack marks another escalation in Ukraine's campaign of long-range strikes against Russian military, industrial and logistical targets.

Six Killed in Russian Regions

Russian regional officials reported at least six deaths linked to the Ukrainian drone attacks.

Five people were killed in Russia's Rostov region, while another person was killed in the Moscow region. Damage was also reported to homes and other civilian infrastructure.

A fire also broke out at a large Wildberries logistics facility near Podolsk, outside Moscow. Ukraine has previously targeted the company's warehouses, alleging that some of its operations support Russia's military supply chain.

The casualty figures are based on Russian regional authorities' statements and could change as damage assessments continue.

Russia Reports 822 Interceptions

The Russian Defence Ministry's figure of 822 drones intercepted or destroyed provides the clearest indication of the size of the overnight attack, although independent verification of the Russian military's interception claims is not immediately possible.

Moscow's mayor separately said approximately 600 drones were heading towards the capital. The large number of aerial targets forced repeated flight restrictions and heightened security measures around Moscow.

Ukraine has increasingly used long-range drones to strike deep inside Russia, targeting military-industrial facilities, energy infrastructure and logistics networks.

Ukraine Also Faces Russian Strikes

The drone offensive came as Russia continued its own wave of missile and drone attacks against Ukraine.

At least five people were killed in Russian strikes in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials cited by the Associated Press. The attacks hit several locations, including Kryvyi Rih, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia.

In Kryvyi Rih, two people were killed and 14 injured after a Russian attack damaged infrastructure at the ArcelorMittal steel plant. Kyiv also reported fires and damage from Russian strikes in the capital.

The parallel attacks underline the increasingly intense use of long-range drones and missiles by both sides.

Spanish F-18 Shoots Down Drone

The escalation also spilled into NATO airspace.

A Spanish F-18 fighter jet operating under NATO's air-policing mission in Romania shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace, according to Romania's Defence Ministry.

The drone was detected after crossing into Romanian territory from the direction of Moldova, near the city of Galați. It was engaged at about 5:01 a.m. local time, with debris falling in an uninhabited area.

Two Spanish F-18s were scrambled as part of the response. Romanian authorities have not definitively established the drone's origin, although a NATO spokesperson said it appeared to be Russian.

Fourth Drone Interception in Romania

The incident was the fourth drone interception over Romania this year, according to Reuters.

Romania, a NATO member sharing a long border with Ukraine, has repeatedly faced drone-related incidents since Russia's full-scale invasion. The latest episode is particularly significant because a NATO fighter was required to use force against an aerial object that had entered alliance airspace.

The drone was brought down over an unpopulated area, limiting the risk to civilians.

A Wider Regional Risk

The Romanian incident adds another layer to an already dangerous weekend of aerial attacks.

Ukraine's large-scale strike demonstrated its ability to send drones deep into Russian territory, while Russia continued to bombard Ukrainian cities and industrial sites. At the same time, a drone linked by NATO to Russia crossed into the territory of a NATO member, prompting an armed interception.

For European governments, the concern is not only the direct damage from individual drones but also the possibility that repeated airspace violations could increase the risk of a wider confrontation.

What Comes Next

The immediate focus will be on assessing damage from the latest Russian and Ukrainian strikes and determining how many of the reported hundreds of drones actually reached their intended targets.

For Moscow, the reported 822 intercepted drones represent a major air-defence operation. For Kyiv, the scale of the offensive reflects its continued effort to strike Russian military and logistical infrastructure far from the front line.

The Spanish F-18 interception over Romania will also be closely watched as NATO assesses whether the drone was deliberately directed into alliance airspace or crossed the border amid the wider aerial battle.

For now, the weekend's figures show the conflict expanding further into the airspace and infrastructure of countries beyond the immediate battlefield.
