R Praggnanandhaa remained firmly in contention for the Sinquefield Cup title after drawing Levon Aronian in the sixth round, taking his tally to 3.5 points and keeping him within striking distance of leader Wesley So.

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa continued his strong campaign at the 2026 Sinquefield Cup with a hard-fought draw against Levon Aronian in the sixth round. The result kept Praggnanandhaa in joint second place with 3.5 points from six games, just half a point behind American leader Wesley So.

With three rounds still remaining, the Indian remains a serious contender for the prestigious title and valuable Grand Chess Tour points.

Pragg Holds Aronian

Playing against Aronian, Praggnanandhaa faced a difficult middlegame but showed strong defensive technique to secure the half-point.

The Indian tried to create winning chances and briefly faced pressure after losing two pawns. Aronian, however, was unable to convert his advantage, allowing Praggnanandhaa to hold the position and force a draw.

Three Points Behind the Lead

The draw moved Praggnanandhaa to 3.5/6, placing him alongside Fabiano Caruana, Vincent Keymer and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the chasing group.

Wesley So remained alone at the top with four points after also drawing his sixth-round game against Vachier-Lagrave. The standings underline how closely contested the 10-player classical event has become.

Strong Start for Praggnanandhaa

Praggnanandhaa began the tournament with a draw against American Samuel Sevian before producing one of his biggest results of the event in the second round.

He defeated Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov in a marathon 95-move encounter to move to 1.5 points from two rounds. The victory put him among the early leaders and demonstrated his ability to grind out results in long classical games.

Keymer Defeat Did Not Derail Campaign

The Indian subsequently suffered his first defeat of the tournament against Germany's Vincent Keymer in the third round. Playing with the black pieces, Praggnanandhaa was unable to recover from an early tactical error and eventually lost the game.

He responded immediately in the following round by defeating Jorden van Foreest with the white pieces. That victory took him to 2.5 points from four rounds and restored his position in the leading group.

Grand Chess Tour Stakes

The Sinquefield Cup is the final regular-season classical event of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour. Ten grandmasters are competing in a nine-round single round-robin, with the tournament carrying a $475,000 prize fund.

The event is also important for qualification for the Grand Chess Tour Finals, making every half-point significant as the competition enters its closing stages.

Three Rounds to Decide

Praggnanandhaa now has three rounds to close the gap on So and challenge for the championship. With only half a point separating the leader from several players, the race remains wide open.

The Indian's combination of an early win over Sindarov, a recovery victory against Van Foreest and resilient draws has kept him firmly in the title picture. A strong finish in the remaining rounds could put Praggnanandhaa in position to fight for another major Grand Chess Tour title.
